The Steeler great running back, Franco Harris passed away at 72.
50 years ago. Wow. Where does the time go???
Some things to pass down to the younger generation...
In those days the QB called the plays. In the huddle Bradshaw looked across and saw Franco Harris #32 and Frenchy Fuqua #33. Bradshaw added the numbers and came up with 65. But he didn't like that play so he called "66 Circle Option" and that was the play they ran.
The pass struck Jack Tatums helmet and bounced into the hands of Harris. But wait a minute, the ball may have also touched Fuquas helmet and would have negated the play. The rulebook said that any ball touched by an offensive player cannot be caught by another offensive player. No replays to verify anything in those days so the call on the field stands.
The only person who could have possibly known was Frenchy Fuqua. Upon being pressed by the media Fuqua refused to answer saying, "I'll never tell". Fuqua then went on to sell black t-shirts with yellow lettering, "I'll never tell". He reportedly made a small fortune on these t-shirts.
And now you know the rest of the story.
RIP Franco Harris. You were AWESOME!!!
