Fairly irate here for starters. I go to only a select few in my area that are nails on trained to pinpoint competence. Decided that it was high time to flush out the transmission (Jeep GrandC) and my mechanic regular was a little over my price range.
So I drive up to the hood in Inglewood thinking a place like Amacco can't possibly shit the underoos on this basic procedure and the cost is much less. It is, after all the only thing they really were founded on....transmissions.
Drop the car off, sit in the lobby with Crips, Bloods, hookers and everything in desirable element in between. Car's done in 45 minutes - nice folks. Great, thanks have a nice day.
I go in for a 3k oil change at my guy's shop and the tranny fluid stick doesn't have not even a tear drop on it. I mean dry as the Sonoran Desert. 2k miles I've been driving around with a teaspoon of tranny fluid lubricating the gears.
Drive back over there and spend 20 minutes explaining to Mr "Chief Mechanic" that you check the fluid level in NUETRAL on a warm engine...not PARK. He tried to circle around it but the end of the discussion I told him any tranny problems from this point forward and you're standing in a courtroom with one hand on your wrinklies and the other on a checkbook..
Point of this rant is always check any work that's been done on your car the next day. I swear half of these guys couldn't give a rat's red ass about a job done properly.

Dated a gal once who had her oil changed at Jiffy Lube. Called me on the side of the highway....her car quit. I go to meet her...look under the car.....no oil drain plug.
Got a plug, filled it with oil, and it started right up. She never had a problem either, but Jiffy Lube sure heard it.

Always worth going to a mechanic you know and trust.Even if he is a little dear it shows that he does quality work and that he can charge for it accordingly. He will probably save you money in the long run by being able to get an extra few thousand miles out of your car without trouble over the next couple of years or so.

I take my car to a high performance speed shop with VERY respected and trusted mechanics. Even for something mundane like having a fog light replaced. Much better price than BMW dealership and I know the work is gonna be quality. Would NEVER trust my ride to a Jiffy Lube, Aamco, or some crap like that, you've gotta be joking me with that shit.

I've seen obscene fuckups on my vehicle(s) from 'designer mechanics' up on the rack when I have a minute. Don't be so sure.
I enjoy going back to embarrass them all with illustration.

The dashboards on todays vehicles light up like a Christmas Tree when the least little thing is wrong. Shit, I lose 2 lbs of air pressure in a tire and I'm looking at a red warning light. Doesn't the vehicle's on-board computer shut the engine down under catastrophic events like no oil or transmission fluid?

Obviously some "Qualified" or "expert" mechanics are not nearly as good as they proclaim to be. All I'm saying is that I'm personally friends with the guys at my shop I take my car too. Me and all my buddies, most of whom have high performance rides all use these guys and we're cool with them. We know for a fact that we have quality mechanics who REALLY know their shit working on our cars, and that they are gonna give us a fair price. All you can ask.

I work at my father's autobody shop and you would not believe the nightmares that people bring to us that they got done at their "Dealership"
We had a 2009 Malibu 2 weeks ago that had the front end replaced and the paint was peeling off of the cover. Why? Because they NEVER sanded the cover from the start.
This is a dealership with certified GM workers and they didn't spend 5/10 sanding the cover???
Save on labor save on 360 sand paper. We are seeing more and more of this.
I could start a whole thread about horror stories that I have seen over the years that would make your ears wiggle.

Crow, I figured you would chime in on this along with hutch. I don't work in your business but I have seen and been a part of some of the most god awful paint an body work that it would force most people to ride a Vespa...a pink one.
