*I used two weeks instead of one because if you had only one week and was flying out of the country you might burn a day in just getting there. Look forward to seeing where you'd go.

was stationed in sardinia ( spelled sardegna by locals) while i was in the Navy. Was on an Island called Santa Stefano where we shared the island with the italian Military and we had good relations with them. there are 7 islands that surround sardinia. 2 of which we would frequent bc we had what were called Liberty Boats and it was a 20 to 25 minute ride to either island of Palau or LaMaddelena.
Right on the Mediterranean Sea. Summers were great. Crystal clear waters, great fishing. restaurants were unreal and the women OMG!
The beaches were made of pebbles that were weather worn and looked like Fruity Pebbles cereal. Although there was a beach or 2 with sand.
I want to go back. Takes at least 8-9 hours from JFK to Rome then there was a 12 hour lay over from rome to Olbia airport and another hour bus ride or cab to the port of palau. then a 20 min ferry to LaMadd. Last time i was there was 1985, maybe there flight plans have changed.
So there's a whole day travel there and 1 back.
It's well worth it folks.
Good to go with a couple buddies but not your significant other.
The travel alone would ruin the trip with him/her
Look it up folks it's a must see and on the cheap

Being a person that is REALLY interested in history my choice would be to visit all the countries that were involved in World War II. To see the places that will be forever in history and what part they played in everything would be BETTER than any text book or movie/documentary. One of the "Deer Meat For Dinner" videos that was posted here when he was in the DEEP south Pacific showed some of the bunkers and planes that were shot down and or destroyed.
Sadly we don't have many World War II veterans left either, this makes me appreciate them even more. Had the pleasure of talking to one that served under General Patton at the VA hospital in Las Vegas and man, the stories he shared...could have talked with him ALL DAY!

Both of my grandfathers and most of their buddies served in WW2 ...Used to love being the gopher ( making coffee, tea , mixed drinks and sandwiches) for them while they sat around a card table telling War stories ...
I cant imagine how these men made it ..I wouldn't have lasted 3 seconds in the trenches or 2 minutes in the south Pacific.

Two weeks huh. in that case I would recreate a trip I made with the most fun dame you ever laid eyes on.
Id fly in to long beach ,rent a car and drive up the coast to San Francisco. Wine tasting for a couple days with a small venue concert or two, then making making my way further North with stops in Redwood National Park, Bodega Bay and Gualala.
Then Id cut across, spend a few nights in the mountains along the way, catch the I95 and finish my trip in Las Vegas.

Well one was Steve Winwood from Traffic in the town of Sonoma . Tent held about 200 or 300 people. Many well dressed Cali wine drinkers. Concert was good.
The other was outdoors. An evening with Elvin Bishop in Santa Rosa. Then it was on to a memorable dinner at John Ash.Next Morning I went down for coffee and there was Lyle Lovett having breakfast on the patio. Must of been appearing in thee area.
Not a fan of his music but interesting dude just the same.Guess if I had my choice on who'd I see on a trip like that, it would be Van Morrison. On my bucket list. Thanks for asking Stu You ever make it out that way?

My neck of the woods.
My neck of the woods.
One week in Ireland, one in Italy. Have always connected with Irish people. My best friend is Irish American, as is my girlfriend of many years, she was born in Dublin, came here at the age of two. Their down to earth blue collar mentality and feistiness are qualities I appreciate. Playing golf and drinking beers in pubs, eating a big bowl of Guinness stew, singing Irish folk songs I don't know the words to, right up my alley. The "Emerald Isle" with it's lush green landscaping, surrounded by nothing but water, I'm sure is a sight we could truly appreciate.
I'm half Italian, Sicilian, naturally drawn to Italy. The history, the food, the arts, the people, the countryside, it just all adds up for me. We will be going to both these places in the next couple of years. Betting the NFL has been good to me, except last year. Get back to my winning ways this season that all goes into the travel "kitty," and Ireland and Italy will be sooner than later!

Loved Ireland. Have many distant relatives there. Time difference took me a day or two to adjust.
Went to the Curragh and played the horses. Galway was my favorite town. One of my favorite guitar players, Rory Gallagher is from Ballyshannon
and went to a tribute concert there. Food isnt exactly to my liking but the scenery, beer and girls more then make up for it.
Little interesting going to Northern Ireland [Belfast] and the wall. Little animosity between the two I guess.

Your comments were music to my ears! I was able to trace my family history on my maternal side to County Donegal in Ireland way back in the 1800's. The sad thing was they only list the date of death of the relative that migrated here. They must have lost their papers on the way here. I'd love to see the signature when they came through Ellis Island or even find out how I can get more information from Ireland itself if they have a Department Of Records like we have here.
Here is to a pint of Guinness my brother, with some Bangers and Mash!

My grandmother was right off the boat from County Cavin at 14 years old...never lost the brogue (sp?) So loving the last few posts as well!
Buddy of mine from Worcester Mass went on a group tour from his local pub there and said he ate a lot of lamb and threw out all his underwear daily..no corned beef was seen also!
