Each dollar I bet in nba or nfl or school football pays .91 pennies a dollar and the exotics in horse racing just compensation 5 pennies a dollar? How could I go out and wager 10 dollars on eq when it will pay 50 pennies, and in the event that I go out and wager on 10 dollars on alabama to beat nebraska it will pay 19.10? I used to train and race harness race horses. Para- mutual means betting amongst each other not against the book. In Michigan the track takes out 15% and the purses get 7.5% and the track gets 7.5%. Other states take up to 25%. A negative pool is paid by the track. This can happen when, say a 1-9 fav wins. They try like hell to avoid this situation. 

So your betting against others, not a book with computerized algorithms. Beware, insider information can drive wagering. A horse trains well or they figured out what vet work the horse needs, etc. Happens sometimes, not often.

I've hit trifecta's for $500 plus on $2, a three team college football parlay pays 5-1, so it's all relative and what you like.

As a horse trainer/ owner I hated seeing the track charging for parking, admission, and programs. Your down $10 before you get in the door! That was in the 90's could be different now.

Betting 1-9, 2-5,  favorites to show is like betting Bama football -25  moneyline.

Losing on a 1-9 shot creates bridge jumpers..........

Actually yeah, given most betting is online they should eliminate breakage.  On-track, maybe they can round up or down to the nearest zero.  Free programs and/or pps should be the norm too.  Some tracks have like 24% WPS takeouts which is ridiculous.

Show pool is first second and third. And it is about the wages say someone is sure a horse will win so makes a safer wager it will come in top 3 . the entire handle for the race is addressed then split 3 ways.

This is a sucker position part of the dirt and grimey action of horses. Because it can get ridiculous say you have 1,000 waged on any race at any time in the non winners of 1 234 ect. Class. And someone drops 10,000 online on the show pool for the favorite well chances are it just not that horses day and should bet the field against it to show.....

Tracks make money. Every race. They deal with wagers take 10.  To 20 % of the entire pool... And as clean an odds as you find. Say you have 100 gamblers each put down 2.00 on the show pool show pool any avg day about 200 a race. Ok some outi out of the area throws 10000 to show on a horse against say half the betters 100 then the track loses money paying the bets at 5 cents on the dollar.... 

So well if you run the odds of how many 1 to 10 horses and how many times these lop sided favs win anything you start to see a pattern exists.... The favorite well simply not his day....
