my in laws have decided they will no longer be buying birthday presents for their kids (my wife) or grandkids but will just be contributing to grandkids' college funds at their birthday. Ok, but now they want us to contribute in the gift giving waste of time that is a white elephant exchange. My in laws are very comfortable but also very tight with their shekels, I feel like if they cant be bothered to buy birthday gifts for people, why should I participate in a white elephant? Is this being bloody minded or do I have a point?

Lost my Mom-in-law a couple years ago when she passed. As big a pain in the rear she was I wish she was still around to babysit my son.
Same with my Mother and Father but they were beyond able to babysit, but they missed my daughters wedding, Graduation for Masters, will miss my sons graduation from college in 2019, his engagement, and my youngest sons HS graduation, and him in college.
Dont get caught up in the petty things. You may not but when they pass, your wife and children will be hurt.

The best white elephant gift to exchange is the nastiest, oldest log of fruit cake you can find...that sucker will be passed around for years to come. Include some Amazon GC with it and everyone will think it is hilarious, even those wackos that like to eat that crap.
