Yup, true indeed. 2 more wins and my livingroom set is free!
The thing about this is, for those who don't know, Jordans Furniture isn't just some small mattress store around Boston that came up with a cool gimick idea. They are a HUGE home furniture chain in the Northeast here and they apperently took out an insurance policy deal so they could root for the Red Sox as well. They say over 30,000 people, including myself, participated, totalling upward of $30 MIL.
Go Sox

this has been done before ... not sure if it was the same store and for the World Series, etc ... but a furniture store has done this before under similar circumstances.

You are correct. Last year a furniture store in CA had the same deal if UCLA (huge underdogs) beat USC. Well the Bruins did win and they paid up. I heard an interview with the owner afterwards and he said it turned out fine for him cause he was getting tons of free advertising all over the place. Plus, he seemed to hint that he also had some kind of insurance in place.

It's not twice in 90 years or once every 45 years. It's twice in 4 years. Once every 2 years. Big difference. Somehow I don't think this deal has been around 90 years.

The deal was for about a month in March and April this year. They said whoever buys anything with that 3-4 week period will get whatever they buy for free if the Sox win the World Series this year. What's nuts is that Jordans Furniture chain has dozens of HUGE, mall sized stores and theysell millions of dollars in furniture in a month anyway. Cool deal that I needed a furniture set earlier this year, and had no problem spending the cash for it. Bonus that it could be free now!
