Die Schweigsame Frau. It's a Richard Strauss opera, and somewhat modern. Not even 100 years old. I'm not super familiar with the works of Richard Strauss. When it comes to German/Austrian opera, I'm more familiar with the more common works of Wagner and Mozart. I would recommend that anyone interested in Opera start with the more approachable works of Verdi and Puccini, or something like Carmen as opposed to the heavy German/Austrian stuff.

Most opera houses, at least in America, have a long screen above the stage called the supertitle. The project the translations there. That's kinda besides the point though. If you read the synopsis in advance, you can usually more or less follow along with the plot even without speaking the language. All the more reason to start with approachable operas like Carmen. Besides, for an English speaking audience, it's more about enjoying not only the score, but the music of the principals voice itself.
American musical theatre is fine but it's just not for me. Or I could just be making all of this up because I'm full of shit. I mean, after all, doesn't someone who's full of shit use terms such as supertitle and principal?

Went to an opera. Once... Not for me. It was Italian and yes the date was fine. More than made up for the three hours of Italian theater.
3 hours is a tight little opera. That's about as short as they get. When you get into Wagner. Get into shit like Meistersinger, Lohengrin, the Ring Cycle. A lot of that shit is over 5 hours.

SYNOPSIS Taking place in the mythical empire of the Southeastern Islands, the Empress is unable to bear children. With the help of her nurse, using magical powers & deceit, she tries to use the Dyer's wife to gain child bearing abilities. The story primarily involves five principal characters: the Emperor, the Empress, her Nurse, Barak, a lowly dyer, and the Dyer's Wife. A sixth character, Keikobad, King of the Spirit Realm and father to the Empress, sets the plot in motion, but never appears on stage. The Empress is not human: she was captured by the Emperor in the form of a gazelle. She assumed human shape and he married her, but she has no shadow. This symbolizes her inability to bear children. Keikobad has decreed that unless the Empress gains a shadow before the end of the twelfth moon, she will be reclaimed by her father, Keikobad, and the Emperor will turn to stone.

Good stuff, brother. Bavaria must be doing a Richard Strauss rep this summer. Like I said, I'm not super versed in Richard Strauss operas. When it comes to German/Austrian operas, I probably know Wagner and Mozart more than anything.

...but, you know, I'm probably just making all this shit up because I'm full of shit. I mean, who could make up a sentence like, "Bavaria must be doing a Richard Strauss rep this summer." You can't Google a sentence like that.
Anyway. There's a ton of superstition around theatre. That's an extremely old company though their current house isn't very old. Could've been somebody forgot to put a ghost light out at some point. Could have something to do with the Scottish play. Who knows? Could be that you have to be super accomplished to get those positions so they're all old fucks.

Have never watched Titanic. Have watched lots of Wagner. Would take Wagner over any of that Titanic horseshit.
Fun fact about Wagner: he was great at soliciting donations from rich male patrons, only for a pattern to develop that he was banging his patrons’ wives. He used that money to build the world’s biggest, most extravagant opera house with a unique stage that could be raised/lowered/manipulated. Wagner was the Fast and the Furious of his time. One of the more interesting figures in classical music, that’s for sure
