Memorial Day tribute

Every year on memorial day I think back of growing up at Camp Darby in Livorno,Italy for 10 years Our elementary school would drive us to put red poppies and small american flags on the graves at the Florence cemetery. My memories have faded but I remember its where I 1st learned of what a Jewish star was and the kool aid never had enough sugar and the P&G sandwiches not enough jelly when we had lunch. I remember the grass was always so green and cut so nice. around the 3rd row on the left side there was a soldier from Texas . I would look at his grave and wonder "did anybody ever come visit his grave " from the US.
Its such a beautiful cemetery and about 10 miles outside of Florence. The auto strada { higway} goes right by it.. but the tour buses never stop.. They will mention " if you look on your left hand side we are coming up to the American World War 2 cemetery where many Americans were killed in 44' and 45 ' But the buses never stop ever. Its just a blip on the map because everyone want to see Florence . And I always think.. that is where everyone should stop even for a few minutes and pay their respect ...4,500 hundred Americans gave their life for freedom and never went home.

Its a nice memory for us here now in the US to look back on what is really memorial day . again thank you for posting and down loading a video. Its a nice tribute and memory of Memorial Day and my childhood memories.

 Thank you for those kind words and the message you wanted to share. I served in the military from 1985 to 1988 when Ronald Reagan was the President so the military was pretty much "Boy Scout Camp" because we were strong militarily. When getting to see guys that served in World War II, (interestingly only 167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are still alive as of 2022) Korean and Vietnam and it's always a point of priority to shake their hand and say thanks. It's not much I know but they really appreciate it. 

If any of you that are reading this are a fellow veteran or might have had someone die while in service to this country who I feel is the GREATEST in the world, (yeah, we do have our problems, I am just glad for the everyday freedoms we do have) thank you and may God Bless you all this Memorial Day weekend. Thank you sportchat  Thats exactly what I wanted to show. Amazing to think I'm 9,10,11 and 12 years old and I get to experience that cemetery. The cemetery was about an hour from Camp Darby where I grew up  and think it was kept up by the US Military Police stationed at camp Darby  . On Memorial day we always had a field trip to the cemetery . Its funny how I can remember more about the kool aid with not enough sugar and P and J sandwiches with not enough jelly. Every memorial day I always think of those trips to Florence, I hated visiting the city because my mother would go to the market and buy leather goods to send back to the US to her sisters . My sister and I would have to listen to my mom argue with the sellers. Florence was a shopping trip. With all its art and museums they were secondary . But I loved the Florence  American cemetery.. All the US tours Perrilli etc skip the cemetery and will mention it on the tour bus, But no one stops even for a minute to honor all those Americans that died.  I have always thought how sad that is. I have had friends visit Florence  and they never visited  stopped because everyone wants to see Ponte Vecchio, David and Uffizi  Anyway today we honor all the soldiers all over the world that gave up their lives for America   Although Florence is a small part of this holiday for me I'm glad I got to share with some of you  here. That video of camp Darby was off limits to us. I see the train tracks so that means its on the west side of the base.  We had 2 entrances to camp Darby  Mp's were at both check points You always had to show your ID card to enter the base. The main entrance was where the buses and cars would enter was on the northeast section. Once you enter the base you had the snack bar, teen club Livorno HS, 21est signal company barracks MP barracks the USO building Movie house Gym behind the movies bowling alley officers club catholic church where I received ist communion and confirmation. Down the block was the elementary school across was the PX and Commissary  The NCO club was off the base. 100% of the dependent families lived in Tirrenia near the Mediterranean..We didn't know it growing up but Camp Darby was an RR site for all the Nato soldiers in Germany and France before they left NATO . We lived in resort town of Tirrenia about 2-3 miles from camp Darby. There were maybe  15 Italian beaches but we were never allowed to go to them. We had one American beach in between those other beaches We had 2 MP's at each side and Itailains were allowed walk across but stay near the water line. The MP's were in their bathing suits with there arm bands on MP  Now we could walk along the shore as kids and we were just checking out the Italian woman with there skimpy bikikini's .. anyway nice memories  thanks for posting
