I just wrote a paper check to pay for my utility bill. I just realized something that could lead to check and bank account fraud. I have always noticed my checks have my name, my home address, my bank account number, and my routing number on the check and I never thought much of it until now. All these info on my check could lead to fraud.
1. Could someone get a hold of my check and make a bunch of blank checks? With the info on the check, all they need to do is get their hands on some MICR toner. Actually, they don't need to get a hold of my check. They just need my name, my address, routing number and bank account number to make fake checks.
2. To withdraw money from the bank teller, you need to fill out a withdrawal form and put in your name, your bank account number.and furnish a picture id. Well, if they get a hold of my bank account number, they can withdraw money from my bank account by using a fake id of myself.
3. A lot of places take check by phone/online as payment, I know that Comcast takes check by phone, so all you need to do is to provide your name, routing number and account number to pay your bill If someone gets a hold of my name, routing number and bank account number, they can pay their bills from my bank account.
I guess it's not safe to write paper checks? or am I just paranoid??

But you're forgeting the "paper trail" there is with "paper checks." Yes, someone could certainly use your bank account info to pay their bills over the phone or online, but I have it on good authority they would be caught in a short amount of time.

The answer to all 3 is yes.
