The study of emotion in living things 'less than' humans, on a scale of general intelligence, has a purpose.

That purpose is to understand many living things in way we've never even thought to conceive.

Specialized fields of study are dedicated to this and the article you attached is an example.

This is not 'worthless and ridiculous' and it shocking that you'd say such a thing given your avatar shows - I would guess but I could be wrong - you hav appreciation for wildlife.

Well why would you appreciate wildlife as opposed to a chair or a table or a lamp?

The answer is obvious. They have, at some agreed upon level, a right to life, to reproduce, to thrive, to live out their lives on this plant just like any other species.

So if a scientist wants to extend this to fruit flies, why is that 'worthless and ridiculous' as you say?

Is it because they are so small and to you, insignificant? What does their size or function on this planet have to do with their worth?

The article is essentially saying that a 'human' emotion can be experience in something as 'insignificant' as a fruit fly.

It's really pointing at an appreciation for a wide swath of life because these insects are not merely just buzzing around and then dying, but might very well experience fear, or happiness, or even sadness. Who knows? But fear is might just be the beginning.

Think about that before you create OP's that make you look foolish to those who give these things thought far beyond just a cursory reading of a 'worthless article about fruit flies.' And be careful how you use the word 'loser'.
