nature,
I've thought about this scenario many times while on my lonely drive to and from work. I've come up with the only conclusion that "human beings" can safely travel space but most CURRENT humans are not going to like it. However, future generations will be ok with it. Whether you believe it or not and whether you support it or not, human beings will eventually merge with technology. This is called "transhumanism." As time and technology advances, humans will inevitably merge with machines at which point, (we already are with our metal bone replacement implants. ex: metal hip) we will transfer/upload our minds and consciousness into digital information. It is only that time when we can truly travel the stars and not worry about the damage to our physical bodies or the concept of time. Now for the physical bodies? I'm sure at that point, since technology has progressed that far, with intergalactic travel, if you want to, you can just create a body in a lab and upload a "back up copy" of your consciousness into that body for it to explore space, some planet, experience "life" for a period of time.
Our current human bodies are not designed for space travel. Just accept it. We have evolved to specifically live on this planet and this planet alone. I've read numerous short articles about the astronauts that have lived in the international space station and the damage that "space" / lack of gravity has done to their body for that short period of time. Enlarged hearts, weakened bones, shorter stature, cellular damage, etc. Our body has evolved with THIS SPECIFIC gravitational constant rate and shielding from the Earth's atmosphere that is unique to THIS PLANET and no where else. For simplistic reasons, just think, if you have sex in space, how will your sperm travel without gravity? How will that child develop in the womb? How will that child develop without gravity? That child's body will be severely different due to the difference in/lack of gravity. Then, think about human beings colonizing different planets. What about the new generation that grow up on there? The minor difference in gravity will affect their growth, development and other aspects. Heck, future human generations on a different planet could possibly evolve into a different human species!
It's a lot to take in and think about but long story short, if humans want to travel to another planet/explore the stars, we're not going to like HOW we have to change in order to do those tasks.
Human beings may also have to abandon the notion of time when traveling space. Ever hear of time dilation? It's a mind f*ck topic..
Due to time dilation, Star Trek and Star Wars will NEVER exist.
