Report: Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player

ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” obtained documents and released a report Monday claiming Rose bet on baseball games as a player in 1986. Previously, Rose insisted that he only bet on games as a manager, which ultimately led to a lifetime suspension from baseball. In recent years, Rose has petitioned that lifetime ban.


The ESPN report alleges that Rose, as a player for the Cincinnati Reds in 1986, bet on baseball, including Reds games. Rose served as the Reds’ player-manager in ’86, but according to ESPN, the obtained documents don’t seem to indicate that Rose bet against the Reds.

Did he ever bet against the Reds?  I think it's a valid question of huge importance.  There's nothing wrong or immoral with betting on your team.

Pete was/still is a sh**ty gambler.  The whole reason behind him coming out and telling the truth was to get the attention, and the book out there to turn a profit for a man on the brink of bankruptcy.  Played the woe is me card during the Selig era like a stud.  Everybody hates Selig, so no doubt they'd side with Rose. 

I don't doubt Petey has a screen name on Covers present day.  He's as sick as all of us...and just as mediocre at the craft. 

 I could just see him posting "Mariners POD lock of the day bet it and forget it homies!" 

And then when they're down 1-0 in the 3rd, he's starting a new thread titled, "Taijuan Walker is absolute garbage, they should send that bum to Single A."

They should be able to bet on their own games.   At least we'd know we are getting their 100% effort

I think you have to look a little deeper.  For instance, did he ever burn his Closer for 3 innings trying to win a game he bet on?  Things like that make a difference even if you never bet against your own team.

I believe, but correct me if I'm wrong, his case for reinstatement was that he only bet as a Manager and not a player. He should give up the fight. 

Goose makes a good point. In a hypothetical scenario that I don't think is too far from reality, say it's a Monday night and Rose is putting down 3K on a game so he can get under his number, and not pay his guy for the 5th week in a row.  Maybe a hot, humid night in Chicago like tonight. He treats his bullpen like it's the World Series, desperate for a win. 

Now, Tuesday comes about, and all he has is standard managerial skin in the game. He needs to catch up on reliever rest, and manages accordingly. So, for all those who think there is nothing wrong with Rose betting on his own team and pulling the strings...do you think you're getting the same shot betting the Reds on Tuesday as Rose did on Monday?

LOL I remember seeing Rose in vegas signing autographs. He looked like he was hating life bigtime.

He didn't get the nickname Charley Hustle by jaking.

I'm pretty sure he never fixed games but bet on himself, that's why he played so aggressively.

And if MLB considers betting that absolutely verboten what are all the casino advertisements doing at the ball parks? 

One way or the other, lift the ban on Rose or ban the casino signs.

What a mixed message, sheesh.

Maybe the next game he had his ace going against a teams number 4 or 5 so maybe he figured he didn't need his closer for the next day.

Kind of hard to decipher those situations from game to game.



I also agree with coin toss.... Let Rose in, or get rid of the daily fantasy signs that are all over stadiums.

Can players play on those daily fantasy sites??

I was thinking what's wrong with betting on your own team but then Goose made a good point. I'll take it a step further.

If you're the manager and you bet on the game you could bring in a new fireballer every inning or two which would give you a great chance of winning that game but leaves the cupboard pretty bare for tomorrow's game.

What if tomorrows game features your ace vs the other teams number 4 or 5 and your team owns that pitcher?  Would you even need your closer?

players and managers shouldnt be betting on games period.  Dont these guys make enough money with their salaries and isnt winning a championship more then enough excitement for them.
They can bet all the other sports they want, but dont bet your own sport.  Too many bad things can happen.

Heres 1 example.  you have a player on the mets, betting his team to win, but everyday the mets lose.  That player gets mad because besides losing the game, hes losing his own money everday.  So now he decides to start betting against his team and doesnt play well, so that he can get his money he lost back.
Thats why you cant say its okay for players to bet on their own teams to win, because once they start losing money, human nature will kick in.

 I doubt he is hating life.  I saw him once at TAO.  We were all waiting for our table.  He was with his big titty Asian girlfriend.   He was dressed like an absolute bum.  Jeans and a shirt that looked like it was from the dollar store.    But he looked happy that day.

Pete played  to WIN , money on the game or not .So what if he pushes pitchers or players harder because he has money on the game.  , boo hoo play to win every game.
