.....and in almost every episode I've seen, there is a whole process to retrieveing both the flight data recorder and the "Black Box". Sometimes one (or both) burn up in the crash, are mangled so bad they're unusable, the "audio quality" is so poor it's unusable, they're at the bottom of the ocean and some unmanned sub has to go and get it, or like in one case, some looters actually stole them!!! Also, they only record the last 30 minutes of the flight, so if anything happened before that, it's gone.....
My point is this. We can put a man on the moon, but we still rely on a 30 minute "tape recorder" for vital information such as this? Couldn't the whole flight be recorded off site somewhere like the control tower of the flight's destination? Plane lands, erase the data, lather, rinse, repeat. We're not talking about the Wright Bros. @ Kitty Hawk either, these are modern-era jets crashing in 2011, 2012, etc.
Same argument I have over all police not wearing body cameras. The technology is here, and a lot less expensive than the alternative of not utilizing it - and I think that's what pi$$es me off the most when I see things like this.....

I think it was CBS that did a report on this and it would cost too much for the airlines to outfit the planes to live-stream the data to a site.Though the technology is available..

learn something new everyday, I must say, I didn't know that
Your pilots get passed on from tower to tower over land so you're pretty well tracked but there are gaps. If you're flying over ocean then it's real quiet. Primitive but they stay with it because it obviously is working.

I was curious, did a little more research, and yes, just like anything "cost" is a factor. But also, the "Association Of Pilots" lobbied against cameras recording their flight because of "invasion of privacy"???
WTF are you doing in the cockpit besides flying the f@cking plane?!?!?! You do realize every other job has security cameras everywhere..... Why not here?
Also, the major airlines didn't want this info available because of "respect of fallen crew members".....

"Air Disasters" on the Smithsonian channel is an outstanding series on air safety. the lesson to be taken from a LOT of the accidents is something I have known for decades.
do NOT get on an airliner flown by Asians, Middle East pilots (with the exception of EL AL) OR South Americans. IF a foreign carrier is NOT using ex-patriot Americans, British or northern European pilots for their flight crew, I ain't GOING!!! AND I'm not really crazy about the French, Spanish or Italians either
