My first sports wager was at age 10. I took the Baltimore Orioles to win the 1966 World Series. My uncle who was a huge Dodgers fan came over to have a few beers with my Dad. They got around to talking baseball and I joined them at the kitchen table.
My uncle was trashing the Orioles saying his Dodgers would make short work out of the Orioles. Little did he know that all summer long I would listen to WBAL 1090 on my transistor radio under my pillow as I fell asleep at night.
I got my entire bankroll, $50 in a cigar box, and brought it to the kitchen table. It was everything that I'd earned cutting lawns all summer.
My father, trying to teach me a lesson, grabbed the entire $50 and said "It's a bet". My uncle ponied up his $50 and the war was on.
To make a long story short, my Orioles swept the Dodgers in four straight games. Drysdale and Koufax were good, but the upstart Orioles were better. Jim Palmer pitched a shutout in Game two, riding a Paul Blair solo shot to a 1-0 win. Frank Robinson was the Series MVP. Brooks Robinson was "the Human Vacuum Cleaner" at third base.
I treated my friends to ice cream and candy at the town soda fountain. We were Kings for the next month or so.
And that's how it all began.
Next summer I was talking baseball with the barber as he cut my hair. He set me up with the town bookie and my sports gambling career was launched at age 11. I've been a gambling degenerate ever since. Over the years I'm sure I've lost more than I won. But as I got older, the knowledge kicked in and the tide has reversed. You live and you learn.
Always protect your Bankroll.
