Ever heard of the German approach? At 16 or so guidance counselors talk to the parents and say something like, "This kid just doesn't have it for college, but would make one heck of a mechanic. Send him to the VW tech school in Wolfsburg."

I've yet to use my 4 year B.A. in Journalism as a career yet. I was offered one job right out of college to work for the Fairmont Times as their High School Football Editor. I had to copy edit, design, layout 4 pages M-T, 6 pages F, and 5 for S,S. This included me required to write at LEAST 4 side bars and 5 pieces, along with at least two game recaps of games I attended on Friday's. Work you like a f**king dog, and the salary? 25K per year!!! Not even enough to move to WV. Yet found the oilfield and instantly started at six figures as an entry-level rig hand, and got to work my way up the ladder.
I agree college is clearly necessary for medical careers, paralegal, engineering and so forth, but MOST occupations out there, college degrees just do not apply for anything more than a paper-made foot in the door.
