Volkswagen has admitted to rigging their cars by using software which lowers emissions to legal levels during standard emissions testing, although the emissions levels are designed to be illegally high both before and after the testing. Brilliant ! And now, having been caught, they're screwed.
You have to love it when genius collides with stupidity.

There is no way that Corporate Fukkery doesn't go all the way to the top. I wonder how many other car manufacturers are using the same gimmick? Although Japan usually holds their Corporations to much higher standards. A Japanese CEO would be shamed into committing Hara-Kiri.

Corporate Fukks. Put the CEO in jail.

Goose--I guess what fascinates me about this story is trying to imagine how it happened. It seems so stupidly reckless and likely to be discovered. I don't doubt for a second the corporate greed element is there for this or any other car manufacturer. However, I think they normally weigh the risk of getting caught, which in this case seems almost likely. And, when they're deciding to do this, you'd think they'd insist on some level of plausible deniability, e.g. "we had no idea smoking tobacco causes cancer." Apparently, there was no way to deny the design, so they just have to eat the consequences. Incredible stupidity, particularly coming from a major manufacturer.

My nephew is a computer wonk and a diehard VW groupie.(Of the 8 tattoos he can flash at least 2 are VW ) He's got a VW diesel and this is something he would think up himself, and he's loving VW for this if he didn't already know they had done it.The VW dealer he works with are a bunch of buccaneers and they set up drag racing on the weekends. The German CEO's attitude is likely "Yeah we did this,So what"

The CEO lost his job today. The company is facing $18 billion in fines, according to news reports.

this is getting a lot of publicity and rightfully so, but i don't think it is nearly as bad as this one. a car company makes a conscious decision to cut corners that is guaranteed to kill a lot of people and it does and no one is going to jail.

Club---I don't necessarily disagree. Flip a coin. GM made an affirmative decision not to CORRECT a life threatening defect. Volkswagen invented---think about that---INVENTED--- life threatening software designed to permit levels of nitrogen oxide, an ingredient of smog linked to respiratory failure, forty times the levels permitted by the EPA. Forty times !
In a sane world, executives of both companies would be going to jail for a long time. I'm with Goose on this one---it's time to hold these criminal corporate fukks accountable.
