The simple answer is because most Grocery Stores are Corporate Chains and these Corporate Fukks™ employ Bean-Counters who tell them Plastic instead of Paper saves them 3 cents a bag. You wouldn't want the CEO to lose out on his seven digit annual cost cutting bonus. That would be cruel.

Scam it is. One of the Grocery Stores near me is practically FORCING everybody to Self Check-Out your purchases. They have one or two Full Service lines available but have ten Check Yourself Out Lanes.

I don't care how long the line is... I AM NOT checking out and bagging my own sh!t. EVER.

We have one store near us that charges 10 cents a bag.  But it is high quality heavy plastic with handles and fairly large.  Use them in the bathrooms for trash can liners so it works out in the end.

It was never there long enough to keep in a fancy Glass Vile. Sh!t would be gone in a matter of hours. Quality paper gloss magazine material, like Playboy Centerfolds, were my choice of packaging.
