lets say you have 1 of your kids who works full time for minimum wage at 40 hours a week. There's internet, electricity, gas, trash, and cable. And lets say that your son/daughter is an average person, not a totally bad person, not a totally good person.
I would like to have as many responses as possible even if you don't have any kids of your own and that we are talking about living in the top 20 cities in america with the highest rent costs. I would also like to add that you pay no rent yourself as the parent because your grandparents just so happen to not charge any rent to you at all because they don't care to incur on any property taxes for themselves.
Just to be clear we have a total of 3 parties living on the property in 2 separate houses. Grandparents at 1 house. At the 2nd house you have the parents and your adult son/daughter. You would also think that the grandparents have just as good a relationship with the grankid but somehow it's not that great, it's neutral. Yes neutral in such a way that they as grandparents do not care if the parents charge rent to the kid, just that the grandparents do not want to incur any property taxes.
Would you as parents take advantage of the opportunity to charge rent to your kid knowing that the cost of rent in a top 10-20 city in america are going to have high rent costs?
In my case, if i were the parents i would not take advantage of a business opportunity like this on my kid no matter how bad the relationship might be, because i myself am not being charged rent. Now if i really wanted to be fair i could split the electric bill, internet, food, and utilities but that's still going to be well short of what amount of money renting a room to a person would command in a major city.
The other scenario that you could possibly take advantage of as a parent would be to rent a room out to someone else like a friend/acquaintance and then command more money that way without that person really knowing the circumstances because they always pay by cash and it's not like they will be there more than a year or whatever. Realistically you could make your kid pay rent, not make him pay rent at all but then allow the kid to get up on the feet then make the kid move out, or just not worry about the rent at all and let your kid stay as long as he/she wants.
