Breeder's Cup Factoids

Trainer Christophe Clement is 0 for 40 in BC races. He has 3 shots Friday in the 6th, 8th & 10th & 1 shot Saturday in the 11th.

The wavering pools are humongous in these races resulting in some very nice payoffs. These are the highest prices: Win $269.20; exacta $2117 (last year); trifecta $39,031.20 & the superfecta paid $629, 907!

Trainer Wesley Ward has won the last 2 Juvey Turf Sprints & has 3 entered this year. The chalk has won this race at a 67% clip. The winner has gone wire to wire in each of the 3 races won starting in 2018. All 3 winners had 3 or fewer starts & the Euro's are 0-15 in this race. 

Pizza Bianca & Carvel are both owned by Food Channel star Bobby Flay.

9 of the 14 Juvenile winners had a prep race in Cali. #3 Oviatt Class, #4 Papacap, #8 Barossa, #9 Pinehurst #12 Corniche all fall into this category. In the last decade only twice has the winner gone wire to wire. 

The favorites in the Juvenile Turf have won at a dismal 14%. Trainer Aidan O'Brien has won this race 4 times which is more than any other trainer.

Even though Gamine in the Filly/Mare Sprint is based out of Cali & has trainer @ Del Mar, this will be her 1st race at the track. This race has never been won wire to wire by the pacemaker. In 14 races, they are 0-2-1.

Defending champion of the Turf Sprint, Glass Slippers, has finished 3rd in all 3 of her starts this year. She won @10-1 last year. Same goes for defending champ of the Filly/Mare Turf, Audarya, hasn't won since last year when she cashed @17-1.

In the Filly/Mare Turf, Euro's have 4 of the last 5 races including back to back winners in 2019 & 2020. Girls that have prepped for this race in Cali are a horrible 0 for 48. #1 Going to Vegas & #11 Dogtag are the only 2 that fit in this category. Aidan O'Brien has not done well in this race going 15-0-2-2. He has a good chance to break that curse with # 4 Love.

In the Sprint, 6 of the last 8 winners have been 9/2 or less. As a prep race, the Sant Anita Sprint Championship has produced 7 winners. #3 C Z Rocket & #9 Dr. Schivel, who won that race, fit this category.

In the Distaff, the favorite has won 43% of the time. # 6 Letruska will be the chalk here. 

In the Turf Classic, Euro's have won 17 of the last 22 including 5 of the last 6. #7 Walton Street, #8 Broome, #9 Sisfahan, #10 Yibir, #12 Teona & #13 Tarnawa all fit the bill.

8 straight Classic winners have been 6-1 or less.

Here were my write-ups on PIZZA BIANCA and DERRYNANE from their respective July 22 debuts (which produced a nice $25.00 double)

Saratoga - Race 5

#10 PIZZA BIANCA (3/1 ml)

2yo firster going two turns on grass for the Clement/Rosario combo comes into this race having worked heads-up from the gate on 6/17 with SENBEI, who scored an impressive gate-to-wire win here last week in the faster of two maiden sprints. Following that, PIZZA BIANCA worked with older 4yo barnmate MONTAUK SUMMER, who was last seen running a close fourth (beaten a couple of lengths) in a 1 1/4-mile turf allowance at Belmont on 6/11. It should be noted that PIZZA BIANCA's last three drills have come heads-up with BALI BELLE (8/1 ml), who is the longer half of an uncoupled Clement entry here. One other potential positive for PIZZA BIANCA is her European turf breeding, as the turf still figures to be a bit soft following several days of rain. That being the case, she would seem more likely than the others to appreciate any give in the ground.

The other one I wanted to give a quick mention to is HOPE OVER FEAR (12/1 ml). I wasn't able to find anything useful on this Mott trainee, but it caught my eye that she had worked 5 bullets in a row. That's very unusual for a Mott trainee, so it's worth pointing out.

Saratoga - Race 6

#3 DERRYNANE (5/2 ml)

Another Clement trainee, this 2yo firster worked heads-up from the gate (2nd-of-31) with recent 4-length winner SENBEI in her most recent lised drill on July 1st. Perhaps even more notable was her June 10 drill where she appeared to outwork an older 4yo barnmate named SNICKET, who has run in 4 allowance races this year and finished second in 3 of them. Appears speedy and well-meant.

Good stuff Midnight. Nice price on Derrynane at 12-1 ml.

Will like the firm turf and with expected hot pace will benefit.

Summer meet at Delmar 5f turf races, post 7-12 went 4-105. 5f turf stakes at Delmar with at least a field of 8  2-75

Jockey Julian Leparoux has only 1 mount in the BC races. He will be War Like Goddess for Bill Mott in the Filly/Mare Turf.

In the Juvenile Fillies, #14 California Angel was purchased for 5,500. Trainer George Leonard III is believed to be the first black trainer to enter a horse in the BC races.
