Three undefeated speedsters, and another whose run-off 3 in a row; includes one that sold for $900,000; Top shelf Pletcher, and McLaughlin; two local conditioners, Stanley Gold, with two entrants, and Alan Goldberg......
Holy Moly....this race has everything...except a full field with just 6 entrants.
Let's start with #2 ZULU for Pletch, the $900K son of Bernardini co-owned by Chicago ABC television news anchor Ron Magers. Undefeated, 3-1 ML, 3rd career race, first graded stakes; working like a pro, but in tough against......
#6 Moyhamen, 6-5 fave for McLaughlin and, along with Nyquist, an early Derby leader. Undefeated son of Tapit, the $300K monster already has 3 graded wins, in the Holy Bull, last out, Remsen, and Nashua, including 95 Beyers in his last two. Studious work leading into this. Junior Alvarado has taken him all the way and I find little reason to go against.
Stanley Gold brings in a $5000 FLA-bred, # 5 Awesome Banner at 7-2 ML. Before writing him off against Zulu and MHam, consider he's won the Hutcheson and Swale. Undefeated in 3 career starts, he's won by a total of nearly 20 lengths. Racing luck is what he needs, but with a 90 and a 94 Beyer on his resume, and all of his wins on this track, you must at least give a decent look-see.
#4 Awesome Speed needs some perusal. For local sharpster Alan Goldberg, he's won 3 in a row after a ho-hum 7th place finish in his debut. At 4-1 on the ML and out of the great Awesome Again, he looks to improve on his back-to-back 87 speed.
My Picks: Nothing scientific here. I just can't play against chalky #6 Moyhamen and I see nothing worth playing for any kind of price underneath.
