Some of you may know me from the sports forums, specifically MLB, NBA & NHL. Over the last few weeks i have really been getting more and more interested in racing. Harness and Church Hill Downs. I have always been in love with horses. As a child, I grew up on a farm owned and operated by my late Grandfather Alfred Morehouse. As I started recently dabbling in race wagers, Ive been completely stumped on the odds. I understand the math and how odds work BUT, I'm confused when the odds say for example, (4) is this not saying 4-1 or 4-2? If I laid 10.00 on (4) odds. what would you guys calculate as the pay out. The type is (show) and the book is DK horse, If you need that info. Ive looked on google but it only explains fractional odds. This might be the dumbest question and embarrassing to ask. lol But Covers always has the info I need. That's why I have been a member for years.
Any help would really be appreciated. When the odds are 5/2 or 7/2 I understand what my pay out will be but when its a whole number im always wrong on what my payout will be.
Thanks,
The Welder.

Hey Guys n' Gals,
Some of you may know me from the sports forums, specifically MLB, NBA & NHL. If I understand your question correctly, here is what you seek.
Odds listed on the tote board are win odds should be thought of 'number' to 1 unless it (tote board) specifically shows 'number' to 2 (5:2, 7:2, 9:2 or 5/2, 7/2, 9/2).
From your example, 4:1, it, the win ticket, would pay between $10.00 and $10.99 per $2.00 wager. A $10 wager, is treated as five $2.00 wagers, for the payoffs on the tote board. If the 4/1 selection won and paid $10, your $10 win ticket would return $50 ($10 payoff x 5 times). General 'rule' place payoffs, if win odds are 4:1, will pay at least $4.00 and show tickets $2 and change. More money is made with win and win/place tickets (equal amount for win and place, IF win odds are 5:1 or greater/higher/more). A person could cash 5 show tickets from a 10 card race and lose money, where as win/place in equal amounts on 5/1 or greater and they finish first or second, one generally only needs 2 wins to have a profitable day. Wager style is up to each person.
Any winner with odds of 'number' to 2 will pay (minimum) of 'number' plus two. For example, 5:2 would pay at least $7.00 per $2.00 win ticket wager provided it won. 7/2 pays a minimum of $9.00 and 9:2 $11.00.
Losing a grandfather is rough, my condolences, as they are a great resource and love to share their knowledge as it makes them feel needed/wanted. What I know of harness racing would fit in a thimble. Every track, including Churchill, have their own quirks. Learning them is relatively easy, however, being able to consistently profit from it most challenging. If you're going to wager, any track, get previous meets statistics - at least three but five is better - and look to see how a jockey, trainer do at the distances (sprint and route) and surfaces (dirt and turf). Yes, it's a time consuming task but gives a person the start of a good data base. There are many ways to wager, decide which one(s) to want to invest in.
Hope this answered your questions and helps.
