Hello All! Friday, March 30, 2013. I'm not sure why, but it seems
like this month of March flew. And while Saturday is fixin' to be a
rather large day of racing, we still have Friday to deal with. Towards
that ens, here is the list for Friday:
Aqueduct - 3,8
Gulfstream - 2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10
Santa Anita - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
Tampa - 4,5,8,10
Fairgrounds - 4
Notice how the list for Gulfstream Park swells. Good ones are running,
the connections are in town, private jets are littering the tarmac of
the Ft. Lauderdale airport, and the better animals are primed and ready.
Thursday's Key Horse Flower Mart won, although I'll bet you
didn't think she would get there. She did. And the last two splits in
the mile turf contest went 11.57 & 11.82. True, the turf course down
there is blazing fast...remember that for Saturday. But consider that
in race 9 at 1 1/16 miles, the boys went 23.39 and 6.17 for the last
quarter and 16th. What was the last quarter for the girls? Add 'em up,
buttercup!
This horse by Street Sense out of the Coronado's Quest mare
Coronado Rose may very well stick around our key horse list for a while.
I loved the way she finished, and it does make me think that Why Katherine who she chased in that maiden race on 1/10 had the inside advantage after all.
One more point: Coronado's Quest. This one was a head case. Very
talented. One day my wife and I were leaving Saratoga Race Course after
the final event had been run for the day. It was a bit late and the sun
was making its way down towards the hills to the west. The shadows were
long and we were talking we walked past the empty paddock until I
noticed there had been no response for quite a while. I stopped to find
my wife about 20 paces back, absolutely transfixed, staring at the lone
horse in the paddock, awash in the reds and shadows of the setting
Saratoga sun. His copper coat a perfect compliment to the long
wavelengths that flooded the paddock at that late hour. He was not just
beautiful. He was utterly magnificent. I do mean magnificent. Nothing
less. Standing as still and strong as one could be.
It was the colt Coronado's Quest. He was about to go on and win the
Travers, which would be his last win. He had already conquered the
Haskell, and before that the Dwyer, and before that the Riva Ridge, and
before that the Wood memorial, and before that the Remsen, Nashua and
Cowdin. 10 wins in 17 starts.
We forget about horses like this, except if they one day in the past
have taken your breath away. I might be way wrong, but I think Flower
Mart has some of him in her veins. We'll certainly find out.
There will be several Key Horses on Saturday and I will deal with one in particular tomorrow.
One last thought. I'll miss the World Cup and the Florida Derby to the
responsibilities of work. I will however, phone in a bet, the last time
I'll be able to do this on a horse I bet with the heart.
Nothing would make me happier than to see Animal Kingdom take the cup
and put an exclamation point on his career. His daddy was another
magnificent animal and he carries the tradition well.

You're right no way did I think flower Mart would even hit the board, especially after having to alter course in the lane, plus poor post, plus slow fractions considering they are running on cement, not turf. That turf course is worn out. Nice call though.

I am looking at a couple of Horses at the Florida Derby tomorrow. Here is what I have come up with....
Race #2: 4-3-5
Race #4: 1-3-4
Race#6: 4-7-6
Race#7: 8 to WPS
Race #8: 6-3-5
Race #10: 9 to WPS
Race #12: 6-1-3-5 (with side bets on the 3 and 5 and 1)
Would like your feedback and what you think.
Dear b18: Man, yer killin' me. I would love to try and lend some feedback but I don't even have the time to handicap these races for myself! Not a good deal for me this weekend. Fo race 12, see my post today. I really like Orb, liked him as a key horse in the Fountain of Youth and before that as well.
R10: How about the Travers winner? Or Rosy N?
R2: Pletcher is loaded and means business. So does J.R. Who's he riding?
Way past by bedtime and I still have a website piece to write. All the best luck tomorrow. - Slew
