I still think he had some sort of breathing problem by the way he was bobbing and what, to me, appreared to be a bit choked up (though not choked by the rider).
I watched his last few races, including his magnificant BC win, and I cannot believe this horse could be a shaky as he was in the Wood.
Lest we forget that Secretariat finished third in the Wood....they later found an absessed tooth that was the root of the problem.

Toby is all heaert amd will always give a good effort just like Caleb's Posse this week in arkansas Although I think If the Factor can win that he will be fav for the derby but i still would want someone who already got dirt in his face so I wont pick MO or the Gactor but they still look one two to me if it was a 5 horse kentucky derby

Maybe there is an explanation for the race that hasn't emerged yet, but it just "looked" like a horse searching for the wire at about the mile.
Of course horses don't always win their last preps. As mikey pointed out Secretariat lost the Wood. I think Funny Cide ran 2d or 3d in the Wood as well. It's not dispositive by itself.
But I think you would prefer to see a horse running on at the end, and not backing up. He is either distance limited or was short. We will find out on May 7th.
My hunch is that his problem may be some combination of both, and i just don't think Pletcher can radically improve his fitness level by working him from now until the Derby. This is the boat you find yourself in when you only "run" your horse 2 times at 3.
Again I had hoped he would have won the wood in dramatic fashion. If only to beef up thee odds on mine.
That likely well not be the case now .Who is the likely favorite anyhow.
Bluegrass may tell us. It could be the "Factor"

Agree with everything Vet said. Unless they find something wrong with Mo, I become of the opinion that Mo was simply not what we thought he was.
Atlas lamented in another thread about the current state of 3 year olds and horse racing in general. He raises a valid point..and what if Mo's victories were simply the result of the right races against bad horses. Honestly, who else emerged from the Breeders Cup Juv race?
Other horses that didn't fare well in their final preps seem to have valid excuses. Traffic, injury, testing a new running style, etc. Perhaps Mo was being tested as a front runner as opposed to a stalker? Possible, although I doubt it. We do know that the front was fairly easy. He wasn't pressed hard, the fractions weren't brutal.
I'll still play him a bit, but he won't be all over my tickets unless they tell me something correctable was wrong.

I am not totally convinced that the horse can't win the Derby. I keep searching for Todd;s Grand Plan....the guy is too good of a trainer. My only thought is that if the horse isn't Derby worthy, then maybe it's the owners that wer pushing him. I just don't know, but I am having a tough time believing that htis horse cannot go 1-1/4 miles. His Dad probably should have won the Derbythe year he was in it.

It is possible that he was far ahead of the pack as a 2 year old and simply didn't progress. Kind of like the kid in 8th grade who is 5'10 and plays center but doesn't grow more by his senior year.
I'm at a loss too, and agree on Todd. But absent a valid excuse, I really have to wonder if he was 'all that' or just if everyone he faced wasn't.

Thinking about this some more and I still can't find any reason to back Mo or give him any type of excuses. If I were Pletch the thing that would concern me very greatly is his lack of pace. If you look at the numbers from that garbage stake he was in and the Wood Uncle Mo's speed and pace has dropped off considerably from his 2YO form. We can say "he is saving himself", "just a tuneup", "not fully cranked up" and all that but I ain't buying it.
I always had very serious questions about whether he could get the distance. But, I did fall for his talent, speed, and pace because frankly those races he ran last year were very legit. What the hell is Uncle Mo waiting for? The fact that he did not sizzle past the fields in these two races is a big concern to me as speed/pace was his biggest asset. The two races he ran this year tell me that for whatever reason Uncle Mo just is not as fast as the horse we saw last year. I don't know what else to say.
I feel the Derby is such a scramble he could win just as any of the other 19 could as well.

Since this entire Derby is turning into a mystery, who is more mysterious than Santiva. 4-wide in the Risen Star and a length behind Macho. I was ready to pounce in the La.Derby and his connections opt out for a race on synthetic. You figure it out. By the way doesn't his name mean some kind of Cannabis. That might explain some things. Good thread, guys.
