If our country is loaded with natural gas, why arent alot
Unfortunately I think we would need sustained gas prices over $4 to cause a real shift from an oil based economy. Oil demand has only dropped by 2% in the US this year, with oil prices up 100%.

NG has limited uses compared to RAW crude..you cannot take NG and turn it into many things, while you can take crude and turn it into a ton of things.
Our cars, manufacturing, airplanes etc are for the most part not equipped for using NG, and it is also not as effective VOLUME wise, meaning natural gas has different properties than crude/gas and makes it impractical to use for certain things.

The article I read (2007) listed gas as being $3.50 per gallon and the nat gas equivalent at $2.55 at one of the few service stations around, but filling up at home would be even cheaper than that.
I would link the article but for some reason this board won't let me cut and paste. The article was from July 2007 and was in USA Today

As to wallstreets point, nat gas cannot be used to make plastics, etc. But if we began to use crude oil just for plastics, makeup, etc and nat gas for transportation, that could be a very good move. More jobs in the US (we have lots of nat gas) and less money going to gov'ts that hate us are just two reasons that immediately come to mind.

There are conversion companies who turn ANY car/truck/vehicle into a CNG operable vehicle, but when you add the conversion costs and the limitations distance wise, the length of time it would take to realize the price difference is a very long time. Also as we have discussed here all converting to NG does is shift the demand, it does not reduce it..so now NG goes higher, peoples heating costs go up and the net result is bupkis.
The problem is DEMAND..slow demand, not shift it.

The Marcellus shale reportedly has about 167 trillion cubic feet of nat gas, 128 cubic feet of nat gas is roughly equivalent to 1 gallon of gas. I like the math on that, and that is only one natural gas field and it is in America.

NG has plenty of problems and these remote locations with no delivery in place will keep being reserves.

Slowing demand would be nice, but lets face it, Americans aren't going to change their habits. Gas has gone up 100% in the last year and demand has gone down 2%. Meanwhile we are sending billions of dollars per year to people who hate us and we keep sitting at a McDonalds drive thru for 15 minutes instead of walking inside. Why not shift the demand to something that we have so that we keep the money within the country, paying our own people to drill, run pipelines, etc?

Yup thats my point if our country is so loaded with natural gas, then start spending the money now to convert what things we can to natural gas. Sure lots of things you cant use it for, but what can be used, we should start doing now. Like you said look at all the jobs and money that will stay in our own country. That sure could help to spur the economy. Its gonna be hard to get Americans to change their ways, unless gas goes to 10 bucks a gallon and if that happens, you can kiss our whole economy goodbye.
Also another thing that i just dont understand is why dont we start copying what brazil has done with beets to make their fuel. Why are we screwing around trying to convert corn to fuel, when beets are so much better and its already been proven that it works well. It sort of seems like the powers to be are the ones who are really lying and raping us. When the greatest nation supposedly on the planet cant find new forms of energy in this day and age, am sorry but am smelling scam. I truly believe that these new forms of energy are being held back, so the oil companies can sell us every last drop of oil on this planet, before introducing us to new stuff.
I dont have kids and its to late in life for me to have some, but i truly feel sorry for all you guys who have kids and what they and their kids are gonna have to face down the road. Pretty scary stuff. Maybe someday we will once again have leaders in our country who do the right thing for the good of all the people, not just themselves and special interests.
