in short, you can learn a ton on your own, investopedia.com has tons of lessons and online things you can do to learn and links to other sites. that's my favorite website especially when i want to explain something that is technical to one of my lay person clients.
you may want to get a broker depending on how much money you have. that way you can learn along the way with him/her and make sure that before you are capable to manage your money on your own that it is taken care of.
now i am not saying this b/c i am a broker in bev hills, i am saying this b/c it is in your best interest.
it does cost more to have a broker, a lot more, BUT there are plenty studies and facts out there that show that the average individual investor loses money over the longterm and if they gain money they dont outperform the market as a whole.
if you have any more questions let me know, ill try to check back at some point.
The goal is obviously to become competent and outperform the market on your own. At this point you would be taking a stab in the dark and until you get smart, you need guidance so I suggest getting an advisor.
Good luck
