I just opened an account with TD waterhouse
kind of expensive to buy/sell with them $30.00
just curious as i would like to dip into the Canadian and American market what stocks you would recommend?

I have heard about Gold, Oil and my bro in law is in love with Citi bank
any tip's?

I'm sure you can do better than $30 trades in Canada. here in the states the online brokers are all $10 or less.
 
as for a recommendation, DON'T listen to your brother in law. Citi SUCKS and could very well end up being nationalized before it's all over.

You must determine how much risk you are willing to take. All subsequent decisions will be based on this.

Homegrown...I use Scottrade who charges 7 bucks a trade, slightly more on options trades. I've never had any problems with them. If I request a check from my account, they send it out right away and it arrives within two days.

check out thinkorswim,  I am switching everything I have over to them, and opening a forex account with them as well.   I believe that they were just bought by Ameritrade, but they are keeping their platform which includes some of the best software I have seen.
