what exactly are exchange traded funds and how do i buy them?

I know that there is the QQQQ for all the Nasdaq stocks but what one or "ones" are there for the Dow and the rest of the NYSE stocks?
 
Would I buy them the same way. Just as individual shares of the entire market?

Big IF,

But if the averages go up this week from where they closed this past Friday......

UYG (financial ETF) should go along for the ride.  No way the averages gain any ground without financial participation.

Conversely, financials take a beatdown this week again-----then the SP, DOW, and NAS will all 3 get crushed.

SKF is the "financial short" ETF.
 
If averages take another beatdown, this sucker could go north of 300.....no joke.
 
The fear and pessimism in this market is at all time high.  Any whiff of bad news, and someone is going to be screaming "SELL!!!!!!!!!!!, Mortimer, SELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

how about for Long Term?  would a "whole market" type of fund be the best way to go?
