No. In my hopeless despair, I shook my head and asked how TF he sleeps at night. To the other fella, typo on my part.

I'm having a little difficulty following your play....if you had a pair of 8's and you split....
The first 8 of the split you get a queen for 18....that's $500.
The second 8 of the the split, you say you doubled down -- if that is true, the play is complete on your side, and with that, you would've had 18 on the first hand, for $500, and a double down, which would be for $1000 -- $500 and the matching $500, with the double. So that would be a total of $1500 on the table.
But then you said you got a 9 with the other 8. So the question is, where did the 9 come into play -- because as I stated, the play of your hand would've been over after the double down of the second 8.
Unless you meant you got two 8's and split them once -- 18 on one hand, 17 on the second hand -- if that is the case, you only had $1000 on the table. That seems more rational, because it is difficult to figure out where $2000 of your money is on the table.
Btw, never be feeling good about hands of 17 or 18.

I think your mistake was thinking the dealer was weak. How is that possible when dealers deal by the same rules ? Nobody knows how the cards lay in the deck, and any dealer deals by the same rules so how could a dealer be weaker then another dealer ?

My thoughts exactly.
Been playing black jack a long time, and it's the only table game I play, with a little craps once in a while.
I guess if a player can't count cards, or know what #'s to stand on, hit on, double on etc...a fast dealer would mess them up. So a dealer would matter for a novice player I suppose.
I just want a dealer with personality. The more you converse, the less the pit boss suspects you're counting cards.

Shit brother...sorry to hear :-( I can only give you with one advice which I apply to myself as well. I went to Vegas for 16 consecutive years at one point and it was mainly partying and fun with chicks. When I did gamble, it was also with a buzz and playing games that are mostly luck. The results were fuck ugly.
Sports betting is beautiful because despite luck there is a big element of skill and intuition involved. If you are passionate about and good at sports betting, stick with it and it won't be long before you recoup your BJ losses. That dealer had no horse in the fight you lost, and he gets none of the $ you lost. Those guys get shit pay from what I learned through many conversations with dealers over the years. Not only are their salaries low, they are easily dispensable.
This BJ loss won't make or break what's ahead for you but can reshape where your focus ought to be going forward bud

ok, let me share my real story happens at Bay 101 right before the shut down.
I start to visit Bay 101 and the Matrix for around 4 months prior, on and off. I was on a roll. winning around 10K for the last 1 month - mostly on black jack.
One day, I was winning around 2K at Bay 101 so I decide to stop by the "let it ride table" and bet with those 2K. Some how I was feeling it so I am not only bet on my hand I also bet with the two hands next to me since we have 3 players at the table. The hands next to mine has royal straight plus, I have plus, and the other hands also had 3 of a kinds. I ended up winning 25K on that hand. I gave the dealers $500, the two people next to me $300 each since they both winning money.
I haven't get back to the casino since. Looking back, I think I made a stupid mistake for even try to gamble at the local casino. I live in the Bay for over 30 years and I start to visit the casino only since Oct-2019. I will not go there again because it is very dangerous to get addicted and get hooked on gambling like that.
I was also getting back to sport gambling when the bowl season started and around the 15th week of the NFL because I got bored. I am spending too much time researching both the NCAAF, the NFL and the NCCAB. It is good that the NFL is over soon.

@ActionMagnet
I know it is tempted but I hate to split my card when the dealer show a potential busted card - especially when I do not know my luck yet. More often than not, the dealer will have good hand and take it all.

This is the BEST advice I've seen someone give here in ANY forum I've participated in. I lived in Las Vegas for twenty years and during my residency there my bets were in the sports books on games and horses.
You can pick a sport and follow it and at least have an educated guess on what you are betting.
The table games I avoided like the plague and if I ever played video poker I only threw in $20.00 and rode it until it was gone and I was out. If I got lucky and won anything that was double my investment ($40.00) or more I cashed out and bought a nice dinner on the casino.

It happens all the time in LV. My first day dealing Baccarat, Archie Karas comes in and sits down across from me. He bets $2,000 - loses, bets $2,000 - loses, bets $500 - loses and gets up to leave. He got taken for all he had in his pocket that day in 90 seconds.
When I was a Pit Boss at Palms, I would see drunk people come down from Playboy Club or Moon Nightclub and try and double and end up chasing on roulette. That game would bring in $5,000 - $8,000 on one shift.

Unless you have a dealer like me who counts while he deals
This can be very beneficial towards any player
Counter included, if I know the counts high and I have a good tipper, I'm likely to say something like big ones are coming, I'd jack it up, on the other hand if I get a lowlife stiff, I'm that guy who tells my floor when I get off the game, watch that fool he's counting, I don't work in Vegas and I work at a keep your own tokes casino, so I don't like that seat being taken by a stiff flea
