Looking for any information that anyone can give me based on experience or personal knowledge on what steps to take to obtain a work visa to live in the good ol' US of A. I have heard it can be quite difficult to obtain a Visa, just wondering if this is true, and what may be needed in order to get through this process.
My girlfriend, myself, and another couple plan on moving out to Nevada in the next year or two mainly for a new experience. We all live in Canada close to Toronto, and would like to get away for a few years to a destination with nicer weather, as well as affordable living, and Nevada seems to fit the bill.
Any comments would be appreciated as we are just getting started on our quest to Nevada and any information would be helpful. Best case scenario someone here on covers has already done this adventure!

you're better off going for 3 months than coming back. They don't just hand out work visas. You dont want to lose your Health Care and Canadian citizinship either. I advise you do some serious research before flying anywhere. Iam not exactly sure what the laws are but I know once you leave Canada for X amount of time you can lose your citizenship and benifits.
Its a fine line I really can't add much more as Iam not sure of it.

I got some answers if you leave for more than 6 months you have to report it or else you lose your OHIP priviledges not citizenship. I think the best way is to go for 3 month periods and come back for a week than go back.

Yeah you can't just decide to move here. You need to get a visa and you'll only get it if you get a job, not any job, from a company here. You can get a 3 year visa, they used to have a TN which was one year now I think they only have H1B visas, lots of paperwork. Has to be a job that the employer can prove there is a shortage of qualified Americans for. Healthcare, IT etc are how you get these visas. You'll get turned around at the border if you make any suggestion that you are either looking to move permanently or if you say that you are going to work somewhere. Chances are you, your girlfriend and the other couple won't be able to pull this off.

Don't quote me on this but I have a lawyer buddy of mine and I've read this also. A Canadian can legally be in the States up to 5 months a year without a problem. That does not mean you can work there. Certain Work Visas are easier to get than others. You have to have a sponsor, ie. to make it easier. You have to have skills sets that an American does not have to make it easier. Years ago, it was relatively easier to get work visas as a model, but with the economy going south in the States and elsewhere...maybe moving to the area for a few months to actually see if you like it first might be wiser. I like the idea of moving down there myself...but every area in the World has problems....we have the frigging cold winters here, but that area in July and August and early Sept can be brutal with Temps averaging in the late 90's and 100's.Good with the move. About the 5 months time frame that could have changed. Contact some American governments in Nevada and D.C. that might help.
