It really depends on how much you intend to spend (gambling, food, fun).....If under $500 a day, then Luxor, Excalibur and NY/NY are good....
It's close to Mandalay Bay and MGM Grand and Bellagio if you are more of a "PLAYA"....

here is the deal with Excalibur...the food is bad, the rooms arent anything special, the layout is bad..but in the end...heres the thing...
Rooms have a lock on teh door, a bed, and a shower.....thats all you need.. and the location of the hotel is great..and is CHEAP
You are a free, 2 min tram ride from Manadalay...a 5-10 walk from MGM...and a $10 cab ride away from any hotel on teh strip....its a perfect place to stay...as long as you are going there with the intention of gambling, eating and drinking as much as possible Like I do, and stay in your room as little as possible
have fun!

Place is a complete dump. You'd be better off at Imperial Palce, same cheap price but better location on the strip. Tell your buddy to book the rooms on a site where he can get a full refund up until 24 or 48 hours before arrival. A few days before you go on Vegas.com and they are desperate to fill the empty rooms at half price.
If you end up at Excalibur, make sure you do nothing but sleep there. the restaurants are terrible, the casino is old and ugly. You'd be better off hanging out next door at NYNY, newer hipper, sexier, much better food.

Nothing wrong with Excalibur if you're just going to gamble and party with the boys....
