It's not as warm in the winter as you might think. Just check the daily high's and lows over the next couple of months. Brrrrrrrr.
I'd suggest not living near the strip or downtown. Summerlin on the west side is nice as is Southern Highlands, I guess it depends on where you will be working/if working. I work from home so I picked Summerlin. Not a lot of casinos out here but how many do you need? There is the Red Rock, Suncoast and Rampart.

You can always get 2-1 buffets and when I pay for it with points at the Red Rock I get 50% off. So basically I get 1 free and one half price.
I'd also suggest getting an online subscription to Las Vegas Advisor. In addition to the monthly newletter which is worth the $37 a year price anyway, you get a coupon book that is worth at least 10x that price. Just the $50 comp coupon at the Palms makes back your money.

Mrs and I only GO "off strip". about the only real "local" deal we have seen lately is the Hilton buffet by the sportsbook. Sunday thru Thursday $5 with their players card and local ID. all the others we visit, GVR and Sunset Stations, South Point or the M Casino are NO real value

I lived near there and if the place is still open I'll bet it's still quality and that was 9.95. All the resturants are competing with some of the best chefs in the world in the casinos.
If you're making friends in a sportsbook the dude's got an angle I'm glad you have good friends but better safe then sorry and better then 90% of the dudes I met in a sportsboook and I might call a friend eventually wanted to borrow money/work a deal.
