As to the family/children issue, it all depends on where in Henderson that you will be living. As in most communities, your income level will determine the quality of education and amenities available to your children...and that includes the public school system as well as the private schools.
I would, generally speaking, prefer Henderson over Las Vegas; but where in Henderson would be the #1 concern.

Animals.....The area is good for shopping, chain restaurants for eating out cheaply, and lots of garden apartments...convenient to the 215 to get to the Strip for workers. It is much more middle than upper...I'd give it a 6 on a 1 to 10 scale for Henderson...if I compared it to areas in Las Vegas, I'd give it a 10....but there are many parts of Henderson that have million-dollar homes.....this area is not one of those areas.
Still, it is far better than a number of areas/neighberhoods in Henderson.....and does offer excellent value for living well without spending a lot.

quija: If you deal well with traffic congestion, then Summerlin is fine. It was well developed and expanded to anticipate the Las Vegas growth 20+ years ago...........However, I would still recommend Henderson/Seven Hills as preferable.
If you are buying a house, you can still find excellent value at 50 cents on the dollar based upon the market pre-2007.

If you do some real estate research on Henderson, you will come up with Seven Hills, MacDonald Ranch, Anthem as 3 areas....all within a few minutes (or overlapping) of each other that are the most expensive areas in Henderson.
However, within these developments, you can find serious value if you are buying...or even renting. This was the area that was overdeveloped during the boon in 2004-2007; this area in Henderson also has the best public schools (a reflection of the prices of the homes)....
Since I do not know...or care to know...about your financial status, I am only pointing out this area of Henderson for reference as a comparison to the initial area that you mentioned in your post.
Happy to provide more information for you if you could be more forthcoming about what you are looking for. As to Summerlin, it's not my favorite because, IMO, it's overdeveloped and traffic during the week can be a mess; but, yes, there are great areas in Summerlin and, on the other hand, because it is more developed, you have housing developments that are less transient and with people/families that are more settled....that, in itself, can be a big plus for someone.

Hi Rebel.....Understand....I just have a personal "hatred" for the drivers on I-15 or I-215....The Over/Under on how many of them don't have valid licenses/insurance is pretty high .....
I live in the area in the Seven Hills area of Henderson (2 minutes from The M and South Point)....driving locally, I am on the Strip and parked, usually, within 15 minutes.
My major point about Henderson is the value in the RE market as compared to Summerlin...especially in the more upscale newer part. But, transciency comes with the territory, as compared to the more settled Summerlin.

@Vegas, luckily I'm transferring to a job right at the streets indicated earlier, and Boulder, your mentioning of all OUTSIDE recreational activities is music to my ears! One of my intentions from leaving Salt Lake City, Utah is for about 4 months out of the year, you would be silly to try to play with your kids outside, but Henderson/Vegas area seems like an all year thing. Even in the summer, I think early morning walks, or sunset walks along the streets would be a beautiful experience for my girls.
Most importantly, I'm so greatful you guys have keep this thread real respectful towards each other. I've enjoyed all the input so far!
