i understand how difficult the job market can be regarding to the field that pertains to everyone's schooling/experience in a town that has a very high unemployment rate. It also helps to know at least 1 person who might be able to help you land a decent job through "connections."
I'm thinking you can't be too picky in a place like this and there should be no excuses about getting a job that is part time working the graveyard shift, or any job nobody likes working, BARE MINIMUM till you find something better.
As an example, i noticed there are a ton of gyms in las vegas, do you feel that there are absolutely no excuses for anyone there not to have at least a part time job? Unless of course you look like a bum and can't speak english, it's just my opinion that nobody should be complaining after having moved there for a couple weeks/couple months or what have you unless you have kids or something but then you shouldn't have moved there in the first place. I'm talking about people who go there without any baggage mainly.
Even if you are a good handicapper with consistent profit making seasons, you should still have at least a part time job to make sure you are always getting some kind of income, even if that means working at a muck job (mcdonalds) or something.
i think a lot of times people are too scared and that's not the type of mentality to have. A lot of times it isn't about the resume, it's about what they think of you at the interview, if you're wearing a tie, look clean, etc. Please everyone chip in with their hardcore/honest opinions/experiences, thanks.

For one, if you're making profit betting on sports, you don't need to be around people as much. But if you have a part time job, it can be a reminder everyday of what it's like being out in the real world. People are dumb for the most part, but you never know just who you can end up meeting that can advance you in life. Whether it would be a better job offer or a co-worker who ends up being a lifetime friend, or what not. I don't think i would need to work at a fast food place, but in case it comes down to it, i am ready for anything.
getting a degree is also a great idea, but it's also not a great idea for some others too. You have to figure out what is going to be best for you. Don't get that degree if you're going to be over $40,000 or more in student loans debt and then not even be able to get a job in your own field for a while after school is over. Again, getting a college degree is a great thing and has been for a long time for so many people, but don't just let it stop there because what's not really talked about is that the student loan business can also be a "scam." If you don't know what you are doing and don't have people to help you through the whole process, you can feel really stuck and cheated after it's all said and done.
sorry but people can survive in vegas on gambling alone. Don't ask how they do it, or how long they have been doing it. Yeah there aren't that many people that are able to do it and you don't need to be in las vegas either. It doesn't even mean that you are able to profit thousands and thousands every single month either. The people that keep asking these kinds of questions and talking about it have the notion that it's nothing but a dream and that's perfectly fine for them. Let the people have the mind that they want, let them think whatever they want, but keep that to yourself and to everyone that agrees with you.

I 100% agree with Crow. Although beginners can do better than McDonald's if they really try, I think having a little money coming in makes sense. As well working a part time job will allow you plenty of time to handicap yet keeps you busy, maybe enough so you don't get bored and lose you winnings on slots or table games. If I were looking to move out there to become a full time sports bettor, I would drive a cab 2-3 days a week for 10 hour shifts. You can still make stops to place bets during shift and good drivers with personality make out well in Vegas.

I'm a dinosaur now but when I worked in Vegas, pre A.C., pre-corporation (oh it was so much better) once you got passed the break in stage (dealers) you'd go look for a job and they'd put you on a game for an audition.
Mainly this was to see if you really had knowledge of the game and could get around the layout.
At that time 'personnel' was a white memo pad on the pit boss' podium and you were told to leave your name and phone #.
If the guy liked you or knew you they'd tell you to put their initials in red ink at the top of your application when they called you in.
