Pete,
I used to live on the North Side of lake Tahoe for 2 years, Incline Village to be exact. There are 3 books with 15 mins of the town - That said Tahoe is not for everyone - beautiful place but the night life is terrible - If you are the hiker/biker/skier you will love it - but if you are like me and enjoy dinners out - drinking - woman under 30 - you may find Tahoe to be less then expected.
You should also consider the cost of living - my SMALL 2 bedroom was +$1000 - in addition little things like food can easily cost twice the price - remember Tahoe is a resort town - thus resort prices for EVERYTHING!!!
Personally I think Carson City - Reno to be the arm-pit of America - nothing but Cowboys, truckers, and pimps - As with any city there are nice parts - but again you are going to pay from them too.
If it was my choice - Vegas. The strip is just as bad as above but once you leave the lights there are very nice towns surrounding.
Good Luck with you move.
