The Gun Store

Anyone been there or tried any of the rental packages?  I have several firearms and it seems kind of steep for only a few rounds through some Machine Guns, but might be something fun to do during the day.

It is expensive for the amount of time/rounds you get... but fun.

I took my Dad and Father In Law, they had a good time. They shot "terrorist" targets and took them home as souvenirs.

It's really only worth it if you want to finish your trip report up with,

"AND, I shot a machine gun!"

yes its expensive but heard its fun.  always wanted to try it.  isnt it supposedly the only place you can shoot machine guns?

if you have never shot a gun before,then i would recommened it. if you have shot one before,try out the M-16 fully automatic.took my wife to shoot the M-16 and she enjoyed it. kills a hour or two,

It is fun but expensive. Last time I went was at a different store but it was 50 bucks for two magazines out of a MP5. For an extra 10 bucks you get one magazine through a desert eagle. This was at the practical tactical on blue diamond. I would only do it again if some one else was paying ..

I'm looking for a reasonably priced range with outdoor targets from 200-600yrds, does anyone know of a good place?

     "Generally, for any area not designated a "no shooting" or "congested area," shooting is allowed 1,000 yards from any dwelling or structure. Your backstop and "down range" area must be secure from pedestrian, livestock, or vehicle traffic. Safety is of the greatest importance because of your individual responsibility to ensure public safety. You are responsible and liable for your actions."

 

Does this mean I can find an open field around red rock or the desert and shoot away, but how would you know if your subjective interpretation of a "noncongested area" conforms with that of a peace officers?

The big problem is getting to those areas.. For example I live near the edge of the desert in the south west area of Vegas. Supposedly you can shoot a certain distance into the desert because its BLM land. The problem is when you try to get off the street there are signs stating no vehicles. So how do you get there? 

Gun store seems a bit pricey but fun, I ve tried many diff guns but the old WWII Tommy Gun was the best and most fun for me.

Question to you gun veterans, is it legal to sell rifles without going through a dealer and doing the background check? I recently purchased a Sig 556 package deal and it came with the Sig 522 .22lr. I have no use for the 522 and wonder if I can sell it without going to a gun store and putting it on consignment. I don't really want to use online sites like gunbroker either.

Suppose I met someone at the gun range who's interested can I just sell the rifle to that person for cash and be done with it?

Typically you are allowed to sell to whoever, unless you knowingly know the guy is a convicted felon or states he wants the gun to kill someone, but to CYA you will need to go down to your county sheriffs office.  They will give you a transfer of sale and put it in their database.  At least that is how it works in the south.

Now, we got the place to shoot, the gun... next up, the cost effectiveness of reloading your own ammos. I found the following article while researching online. If any of you guys have expertise in this endeavour please offer your thoughts. The cheapest DIY kit  I can find is the Lee Anniversary Kit for around $100. Currently the best prices I can find for bulk 223/308 is $0.20/$0.36 per round, respectively. Can I expect to cut the cost to half if I reload myself?

The above data is based on average costs as of June 2009. If a person wanted to prove a specific point then he or she could easily select a set of extreme cost data that would support his or her point of view.  For example, a person could compare the cheapest reloading materials to the most expensive factory-loaded ammunition and show a large savings.  Or a person could compare the most expensive reloading materials to the cheapest factory-loaded ammunition and show a loss.

Since I am not trying to encourage or discourage reloading I used the average cost numbers for each material to provide a more balanced perspective.

The above data suggests that the average person could save a little money by reloading pistol and rifle ammunition. 

On the other hand, the average person would save money by purchasing new factory-loaded shotgun shells instead of reloading empty shotgun shells.

The above conclusion is the same one I reached in 1974 when I first investigated the costs of reloading ammunition.  In 1974 I could save money reloading both pistol and rifle ammunition but I would have paid a premium if I had tried to reload shotgun shells.

The above analysis does not take into consideration the cost of the reloading equipment.  If a person were to invest $290 in reloading equipment plus $40 in one set of reloading dies in a specific caliber, then that person would need to reload the following number of empty cartridges to recover the cost of the total investment of $330:

5,156 Pistol Cartridges = $330 divided by $0.064 savings per pistol cartridge, or
1,031 Rifle Cartridges = $330 divided by $0.320 savings per rifle cartridge.

This clearly illustrates that a person would need to reload a lot of ammunition in order to break even on his or her investment of $330 in reloading equipment that includes one set of reloading dies.  Therefore, the average person would probably be better advised to invest in new factory-loaded ammunition if he or she can still find it available for sale.

However, if factory-loaded ammunition becomes increasingly difficult to find, or if its price continues to increase, then a person might want to consider the reloading option as a viable alternative.

Did some checking around, the only outdoor shooting range with long distance target is Desert Sportsmans Rifle Club, but they're limited to members and to become one you have to sign up with the NRA($25 yearly) and pay a yearly club membership fee of $200. The only other place I found that's open to the public for long distance shooting is the following...

Take the 15 south and exit at Sloan

Turn left at the stop sign

Turn right at the next stop sign (you'll be heading south on LVBLVD)

Take the road all the way to mile marker 7, in between mile marker 7 and 6 is the pull off.

The dirt road will take you under the rail road tracks and over a cattle guard.

The shooting spot is 1/8th mile down the road and on the right, cant miss it.
