Vegas' local music scene

Got a younger bro (22 yrs old) just finished up music school as an incredible drummer.  He wants to move where he can legally bet on sports and play music...that being said, how is LV's local music scene?  Are gigs readily available?...we live in Atlanta now and this scene is mostly hip-hop (gag!)....any thoughts are appreciated!

Hey bigone....I'm a musician and live in Las Vegas.  Personally, I'm not gigging with anyone right now, but I know the scene.

That said, the music scene is weird here, it's certainly not like Macon, that's for sure.  Most musicians have gigs with cover bands, good cover bands that play on the strip or they get gigs with some of the shows.

Other than that, there's really not much of a regular local music scene.  And, that fact totally sucks.  The local scene that is here is mostly all punk and alternative, so, it'd be good if he were into that kind of thing (I personally think it sucks).

There are a couple of really, really good blues/rock bands around town.  And one or two blues clubs, but it's usually the same bands every weekend, not to take anything away from those bands because they are really good.

But.....what's different about Las Vegas than other great music towns (Austin, TX, Nashville, New Orleans, ect) is that a gigging musician can and will pay the bills, as in, if you get the right gig(s), you can do it for a living.

The Freakin Frog on Maryland parkway

I vaguely remember fried pig nose and good music.

The Frog is a nice little venue, but unfortunately, like most local places here - they don't pay. 

A lot of the bars and clubs around here won't pay for a band.  It's unreal. I had never heard of such a thing til I moved here.  Yes, you can play there, but they won't pay you.  You can always collect the door I suppose, but nobody's gonna want to pay a cover charge with all of the great, free entertainment all around town on any given night.

Like I said, it's a weird scene.  Even around Denver where I used to live and play, all the bars and clubs paid $300-$500 a night for a good band.

MWC, my brother in law David played with a local band called BigBadZero. They get back together every once in awhile.

I think a few of them assembled a new band called the LazyStars.

I miss BigBadzero, they used to play at the old Boston.

There are lots of places that offer open mic nights here in Vegas if that interests.

I don't think it matters, dude hasn't replied.  You gotta love that.  I should have know with only four posts.  Not enough to make you mad, but kind of annoying as I put some thought into my answer to his question.

No man...I've read each one and very much appreciate the imput...Just absorbing it all and been busy with work/family stuff (just found out we're having a kid) so sorry I didn't reply sooner. 

The bro isn't really into playing covers (although I tell him that what he'll most likely have to do to pay the bills while he's out there)...he's really more interested in finding a couple of guys who are actually talented and who want to make a concerted effort to start a "real" band.  He's enjoys most progressive rock/hard rock...just as long as the people he's playing with are somewhat talented.

Thanks for the help though guys...I'll try to be more timely in my responses in the future.

Ok...thanks.  My panties were a bit tight there for a minute.  lol

Well, like I said, Vegas really isn't a good place for an original band, although some have come from here...Slaughter (80's hair metal) and Panic at the Disco (shitty emo music).

But, like I said, if he's a real musician, as in can read music and is willing to play anything, he can make it here most likely.  Also, it's a great place to meet other musicians.

Thanks MWC...yea, he can read music, write it, and play any style from jazz, to funk to the death metal stuff (damn blast beats)...I'll pass the info along!
