Have stayed at the Orleans quite a few times. Nice rooms, good table rates, slot payouts and a fantastic poker room. Free shuttle to the strip that drops you off at Bally's.
A good number of restaurants especially Big Also Oyster Bar. They also have a movie theatre and bowling ally if you need a break from gambling.

Nothing wrong with downtown...over the last 24 months become a lot hipper. Old casinos are being updated/refurbished. Lots of new eats in the area. I will be staying at the Downtown Grand next week which has received many good reviews.
I like the Orleans, although the rooms are beginning to be a bit dated. Staff generally friendly and helpful. A couple good dining options as mentioned above. Southpoint is newer, great rooms, OK video poker, only 2x odds on craps. Nice little deli just off the sportsbook.
Way off strip are two Stations properties, Green Valley Ranch in Henderson and Red Rock in Summerlin. Both are very nice, with very good video poker, good sports books. Red Rock has a good, if overpriced ribs joint in Lucille's. Don't know about blackjack options, but assume they're better than the strip, which is nothing but a tourist trap.

Mrs and I are south of the airport locals and play at both South Point and Green Valley Ranch all the time. Southpoint with an huge sportsbook and are pretty "loose" with their drink tickets. their Mexican food restaurant pretty good as is the Italian. steak house an over priced ripoff, though.
