I'd have to second the last statement above, as one that has studied sport academia and competed at the collegiate level. Training, proper diet and mindset play the largest roles in being successful.
I believe there has been a positive evolution in the sport of MMA and can be contributed to many factors, like how the Fertitta brothers and Dana White saved and popularized the UFC through proper and more effective marketing tactics versus the Gracie and friends trio, and how it is now being revolutionized by broadening its horizon with aspects like the inclusion of women, etc.
Ease of access of information obviously plays a huge role in how fighting knowledge gets passed along. Nowadays, one can learn proper technique at home from simply googling any question they may have. A perfect example is Joe Lauzon and his breakdown of technique and strategy as a fight progresses and how any general member of society and/or fan can learn proper strategy and technique with fighting. A perfect example of this is how Joe Lauzon breaks down last Saturday's fight between Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson. I randomly stumbled upon this simply browsing the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvWtq-o0Zbw&feature=youtu.be.
I would have to say that your post did have me thinking abstractly, which is why I brought up Hercules. From all of the ancient greats, Hercules, Spartacus, Achilles, to be easy, what if the entire reason they were so great could have been contributed to the fact that they were able to think abstractly about fighting, just as Royce Gracie? Because they were great in the beginning (because they had an abstract mentality), their fighting made them well-known, therefore leading to better meals/diets and more training time, etc., which then led to an even better-than-before fight mentality, style and technique.
I think the same can be said nowadays. The better someone is, the more access one has to better resources such as affording proper diet, training, equipment, etc. This balance, or rather imbalance, is much easier to obtain currently than in ancient times.
Ultimately, I can see how both sides can be rebutted and just wanted to clear the air (or thread) about the Mighty Hercules...

I don't think he read post 4 and 5 together, and yes, it was meant to be sarcastic but when he took his gloves off, so did I. Obviously, the newbie had never opened a single thread in the MMA forum prior to this post. Everyone knows I am one of the most laid back guys in here and one of the forum originals.
Feel free to continue this epic debate. IMO, Dos Caras Jr is the greatest MMA fighter of all time.
