Jose Quinonez v. Leonardo Morales
Both of these fighters are coming off decision losses in the TUF Latin America finale at UFC 180. Morales fought for the 145 TUF title, with Quinonez fight for the 135 title.
Morales showed some holes in his grappling against Yair Rodriguez.. He was taken down fairly easily early in the fight, straight into a full mount- where he quickly gave up his back. He survived a few submission attempts in the first round, but was definitely in danger at a couple of points until Mario Yamasaki stood them up because Morales grabbed the fence. On the feet, Morales looked dangerous and explosive. In a fight that was fairly even in striking, Morales gave up the fight by being dominated on the ground.
Jose Quinonez is coming off a loss to Alejandro Perez, which was their 2nd pro fight. Their first fight in a Mexican organization ended in a decision win for Quinonez, but he suffered a decision loss in their rematch last November for the TUF finale. The fight was close but Quinonez had edges in striking and takedowns. Quinonez nearly finished the fight with a guillotine before the horn rang. Quinonez performed better, but he had a point deduction for a nasty headbutt in round 3 and lost the fight.
I like the underdog Quinonez in this fight. These guys are both strikers, but with Morales showing holes in his grappling in his last outing, I expect Quinonez to attack the weakness. Also, Morales is dropping from 145 to 135, which may give him more power but weight cuts are hard on the body.
My Pick: Quinonez (TKO)
Ricardo Abreu v. Jake Collier
Abreu is coming off a solid win over Wagner Silva about a year ago, in his UFC debut. He dominated Silva all fight in the striking game, and finished the fight in round 2 with a massive overhand right that setup a rear naked choke. Abreu is a BJJ black belt and one of the top BJJ competitors in Brazil. He is also a high aggressive striker who throws lots of shots and seems to be always swinging for the fences. He is undefeated professionally with 5 wins- 3 by TKO and 2 by submission.
Jake Collier is coming off a TKO loss in his UFC debut, ending his 5 fight win streak. He started out the fight well, taking Miranda down and nearly finishing a D’arce choke. Miranda got out and back to his feet, and then land a nasty head kick on Collier that setup the ref stoppage with 1 second left in the round. Collier is a well rounded fighter, with his last 5 wins including 2 TKO, 2 Submissions & 1 Decision.
I think Collier’s strength is his wrestling, but I’m not sure that’s going to be effective against the BJJ skills of Abreu. I think Abreu has the edge in every category in this fight.
My Pick: Ricardo Abreu (Submission)
