Hello my friends and welcome back for the breakdown of UFC Fight Night 70. Most of you are probably aware that this card was decimated by the US Government's incompetence and a hack that has completely stopped the issuance of passports & visas. There were 12 fighters affected by this disaster and 4 bouts have been canceled. What remains of this card is only 8 fights, though contrary to most people's opinion I think there are still some bright spots on this card. But make no mistake, if this were a PPV card it would have been canceled without question. Here we go!
Danny Martinez v. Sirwan Kakai
Martinez went 16-4 as a pro before entering the UFC, where he has struggled and is now riding an 0-2 losing streak in the big show. However his debut loss was a tough draw against Chris Cariaso, who in his last 5 fights has only lost to Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson. However, I’m not as forgiving in his last loss to Scott Jorgensen, as Jorgensen lost 4 of his last 5 fights with his only win being over Danny Martinez. He was able to take down Cariaso 5 times in their fight, but couldn’t do anything with it and got picked apart with strikes, being outstruck 73-33 in the final total. In contrast, Jorgensen took him down 10 times in their fight and cruised to a victory, though the striking was more evenly matched. Martinez is riding a year layoff with his last bout occuring in June 2014. Martinez is also moving up to bantamweight in this fight from the flyweight division.
Sirwan Kakai is taking this fight on only a few days notice, due to the VISA issues that knocked 12 fighters off of this card. Kakai is from Sweden but has been training out of American Top Team. Kakai is 11-2 as a pro and is riding a 2 fight win streak, one by R3 TKO and the other by R3 Submission. He is a slow starter, with 5 of his last 8 fights going to the 3rd round. Watching his last fight from the Titan FC promotion, he seems to like staying on the outside and striking at range. He was was rejected by Dana White for TUF 19, and it appears to be with good reason.
It seems there are only 2 reasons he’s on this card: The UFC is desperate to fill out this decimated card, and Danny Martinez needs to be fed a lower end opponent to evaluate whether he will be cut or not. Danny Martinez is definitely fighting for his career here, and will be motivated to put on a show. I think he will have a wrestling advantage here and get the decisive victory over the late notice newcomer.
My Pick: Danny Martinez
Steve Montgomery v. Tony Sims
Creepy Steve lost his spot on the current season of TUF when he suffered a seizure due to his weight cut. Dana White promised him a shot in the UFC, and this is it. He is primarily a striker, trains out of ATT and has a purple belt in BJJ. He’s riding a 5 fight win streak in smaller organizations. He finished 4 of the 5 wins with 3 KO’s, 1 submission. His last fight was a KO victory in October 2014.
Tony Sims is also making his UFC debut. He’s won 4 of his last 5 fights in the “Fight To Win” promotion, with his lone loss coming by split decision to Drew Dober. His last outing was in April 2014, which he won by TKO.
Both fighters are taking this fight on short notice as the UFC scrambles to patch up the holes in this decimated card. I’m going to lean towards Steve Montgomery. He has the better pro record and has a size advantage. He’s a well rounded fighter and has also been more active, having 3 pro fights while Tony Sims has been on the sidelines.
My Pick: Creepy Steve (TKO)
