I will take a shot at those odds with the Angels but only a small one. We all know what the Yankees are about at this point. They are quite simply the best team money can buy. Yesterday the Yanks received their World Series rings in a big celebration at the Stadium. They then proceeded to put seven runs on the board and beat the Angels 7-5. What are the chances though that the Yankees were out at the China Club last night showing off their new rings? I would say 100%. These are baseball players, different than all other athletes except for maybe hockey players as far as partying goes during the season. Today they have to play a day game against a ground ball pitcher. While Javvy Vazquez didn't get a ring his mates that will do the hitting for him today certainly did and those were the guys out last night. Vazquez got beat up in his first start by the Rays and today he goes against another good hitting team managed by one of the best in the business. This game is at Yankee stadium as well which can also be bad for Vazquez. He didn't handle the pressure welll during his last stay in New York (although I think he will this time around) but Vazquez is prone to the long ball and Yankee stadium gives up a lot of them.
On the other side Joel Pineiro uses his nasty sinker ball to get ground ball outs and he may see a lot of lazy swings today from hard partying Yankee hitters. Pineiro gave up three runs over 6 innings last Thursday in a 10-1 loss to Minnesota. This will be Pineiro’s first start against the Yankees since July 18, 2006, with Seattle. He’s 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA in eight career starts against them. One thing we like though is that Jeter is 6 for 27 (.222) against Pineiro and Arod is 4 for 27 (.148) vs. Pineiro - and that's without a night out on the town before a day game. At 2-1 odds we have to take a shot that the Yankees might not be at absolute full strength and full focus today. If that's the case this is the perfect opponent to take advantage of that. Playing 3 units out of 10 on the Angels at +190 to catch the Yankees napping.
