The Tigers are much better suited to take the 6 seed and face the Houston Astros in a best of 3 where it will be Skubal vs Valdez in game 1. If they were to get the 5 seed or 4 seed that means they have to face the Orioles and Corbin Burnes who recently shutout the Tigers twice. Even with Cy young favorite, Skubal, to match up against Burnes, I don't like the matchup and I bet you the Tigers management don't like it either. You don't want to lose the 1st game in a 3 game series. It's been all 2 game sweeps, I believe when the team wins game 1 it's been lights out.
In order for this to happen the Tigers just need either 1 win plus a Kansas city win, or 1 Minnesota loss. So look for Detroit to win just 1 game and no more, they don't want to pass up Kansas city and move up to the 5 seed. So they also will hope Kansas city wins 1 game against Atlanta.

If Detroit wins all 3 vs white Sox and Baltimore loses all 3 to Minnesota and Kansas city loses 1 game against Atlanta, Detroit would move up to the 4 seed and have home field advantage against Baltimore, but again that means facing Burnes in game 1 and they don't want that

The matchup with Baltimore is better for Detroit. Orioles is guaranteed to get booted by whoever they face with that bullcrap they call a bullpen
They might let Burnes go all 9, you know how hot the Tigers have been last 6 weeks, yet he shut them down twice in 1 week. Yes Tigers won the other 4 games against orioles but being down 0-1 in a best of 3, has meant doom

Burnes is a decent pitcher but is a known choker . Burnes can’t pitch every game . Playing the Astros who have championship pedigree isn’t the easy route for the tigers.
Til death do us under

I agree. Low IQ Orioles fans say they want to avoid Detroit in the wild card, when in fact they have the most chance at beating them compared to the pother options....

I guess I’m one of those low IQ Oriole fans that doesn’t want to play the Tigers. The Tigers won the season series 5-2 and Burnes hasn’t been great the second half, although he has pitched better the last 3 games. orioles bullpen is a mess with no real closer.
Not to mention Tigers are one of the hottest teams in baseball.

This is great discussion, I appreciate all the responses on both sides but now that the Tigers clinched, I hope they lay down these next 2 and hopefully Kansas city wins tomorrow, I'd rather the Tigers face Houston in a 3 game series because the players will be extra motivated to make a hero out of AJ Finch who was unceremoniously fired by the Astros for that sign stealing scandal.
Hinch reportedly knew about the scandal, but didn't want it to continue but the players undermined his authority and continued doing so much to his chagrin. Him and the general manager were suspended for 1 year by MLB, but the Astroa took it a step further and fired them both even though Hinch was the one that took the Astros team from white Sox depths for 3 years of 100 losses to becoming perennial contenders.
Interesting how the Astros would become the only team to lose all 4 home games to the Washington Nationals in the world series in 2019, then lose all 4 home games to the Texas Rangers in the LCS last year.
In a 3 game series, I don't like Detroit chances against Burnes and Eflin, I'd much prefer Valdez and Brown. And there's no more dusty Baker so advantage detroit tigers vs Houston but not so much against Baltimore.
The last time the tigers were in the playoffs was 10 years ago in 2014, and they got swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the best of 5 divisional round.
