He had no choice but to take the high road here...what was he going to do? Say the guy was out even though the replay showed he was safe. It he had been an arrogant prick through this he would have probably been fired.  So I'm not whether this is his true character or just him trying to save face.

Only people who really know him ...know the answer...and I for one don't so I have no idea

he didn't HAVE to take the high road.. he could have disappeared into oblivion, like i'm sure he wanted to.  he definitely didn't have to ump home plate yesterday and put himself way out there.  i'm just commenting on the guy's courage; 99% of the people here on covers would have tucked their tale between their legs, shit their pants, and skipped town.

Thats a pretty big generalization, unless you know everyones character on covers.

I may get lit up for saying this... I thought from the moment this happened this might be a "old school baseball" issue, i.e. 3 Perfect Games in 4 weeks? They simply can't allow that to happen... especially letting a Venezuelan get one... bad enough in their minds a Dominican already got one this year....  Bet your ass Jim Joyce and that redneck stache was praying it would be a bang bang play at first...

thebud-- lol I don't think his nationality had anything to do with it. It may be an issue for you, but I don't think it had anything to do with the call.

skanless-- I agree with you. What people fail to realize is that umpires aren't required to talk to the press. How many times have you seen umpire interviews? He took the high road and yes I agree also that is the only road he could take, since he was going public. As far as 99% of covers, I agree it's a high number but not 99%. People who will get offended are probably the main ones you are talking about. This is a site full of degenerate gamblers who get pissed off if guys don't pitch well or get a hit when they have runners in scoring position. How many threads a night do you see "players name" in the thread and then they put how that person is a piece of shit or doesn't belong in the majors or some other ridiculous comment. That's just my two cents.

thebud that was probably the dumbest comment i have ever seen on covers....not allowing a perfect game because of a players race or because theyre have been a few this year...wow is all I have to say

sidenote: wouldn't pitchers throwing perfect games be positive and a good thing for MLB....brings more attention to the game and is a very exciting accomplishment

I was more or less touching on the fact that I think a handful of umps in the MLB are absolute racist f***s and I also think they act out on personal vendettas which in turn has an effect on the outcome of some MLB games... i.e. Joe West

Call me a homer but for Galarraga to give Joyce the line-up card and Det fans not booing Joyce the next day is sign of class.

Galarraga could have easily chastise Joyce so call me crazy but next time Galarraga pitches, that game's ump is going to give him a wide strike zone.

what most of you fail to realize about this game is the fact that jim joyce missed a bang-bang play in the bottom of the 8th at first base, damon should have been called out, replay clearly showed he was, so in jim joyces mind did he feel he owed cleveland a make up call, i dont know, but i do know he missed both calls, but nobody talks about the first one that led to 2 runs in a 1-0 game, so should we have been surprised by his call in the 9th, on principal alone donald should have been called out, but i would like to know if joyce thought a make up call was in order
