Personally, I rather pay more for less years than a larger sum for 6+ years. I actually like the deal because I think he's THAT valuable to the Mets and I still think he should have been the NL MVP because, without him, I don't think the Mets make the playoffs.
Assuming Bautista stays in Toronto, there is nobody worth a damn in the free agency outfield market next year and Cespedes will most certainly use that opt out and get his longer deal.
However, I still feel like there's something beneath the surface that we don't know because I'm still confused as to how he couldn't get a big contract while Upton could and anyone who wanted Cespedes only wanted him for 3 years. So if there is something there and it comes to fruition, then this could be a bad deal. Or...maybe this is what he was looking for all along, I don't know, but without over thinking it, I like the deal.

Let's go Mets! This is a good deal for the mets. The fact he can opt out after this year can be a positive, he may try hard to repeat his numbers for a longer deal after this season...

I think Michael Cuddyer impacted this signing. He retires and gives up 12.5M. Even if the Mets gave Cuddyer 2.5M as a buy out settlement, they still saved 10M.
It just so happens Cespedes got a 10M bonus to his 2016 salary to total 27.5, if he opts out. So, basically the Mets are paying Cespedes 17.5M this season which is fair market value. The other 10M would have been for Cuddyer anyway, who had no role on the team.
