 However, Max Scherzer will get the start today instead and he's throwing opposite veteran Francisco Liriano and suffice it to say, when the smoke clears at the end of this one, I'm expecting this total to stay below the posted number as well. Liriano (4-5, 2.94 ERA) would not give up and earned run in Monday's 11-0 win over the White Sox, going eight frames and striking out 12; note that it was the third time this season and second consecutive start in which Liriano has been able to go eight innings (and note that Liriano is 2-1 with a tiny 1.52 ERA on the road this year). Scherzer (7-5, 1.93 ERA) would throw a shutout as well in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Brewers, going the full nine frames and striking out a career-high 16 batters in the process (note that Scherzer owns a very respectable 2.68 ERA home record this season). No need to overanalyze this one, "recent performance" plays a big part in my MLB handicapping process and there's no question at all that these two competent hurlers come into tonight's game on top form; consider a second look at the UNDER in this one.

St. Louis is the highest scoring team in the league and has the #1 road era. The Phillies are ranked 13th in both Era and scoring. J. Lackey starts for the Cardinals and he has better overall number than A. Harang for the Phillies who has lost his last 9 starts vs the Cards. St. Louis is 36-16 vs right handers. The Phillies are 1-5 as a home dog in this range and have lost 10o f the last 11. Look for St. Louis to get the win.

 The Red Sox caught a break last night, facing Yohan Pino.  The break ends here.  KC sends dependable Edinson Volquez to the mound.  The Royals' righty has a sizzling, .217 BAA in 2015 and will face one of MLB's weaker road lineups.  The Sox enter 22nd in road team batting average and 28th in OBP.  And if and when Volquez comes out, he's backed by the stingiest bullpen in MLB (1.95 ERA). Boston's pen is not good and Rick Porcello has struggled of late.  The Sox are 0-5 in his last five starts, outscored 29-13, and he's posted a 5.29 ERA, allowing 24 earned runs in 31 IP. Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, and Omar Infante are hitting a combined .342 against Porcello with four home runs and 10 RBI.  And while Alex Rios hasn't been as successful with hits against the Boston righty, he does have three homers and seven RBI against Porcello.  KC rolls in on an 8-1 run as a favorite and they're 6-0 when Volquez throws on four days rest.

Miami Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds Miami Marlins

Miami has dropped 3 straight, including the series opener last night, but I really like the value we are getting with the Marlins in this matchup. Miami's Tom Koehler has just a 4.03 ERA over 13 starts on the season, but is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA over his last 8 outings (7 starts).

You also have to like the fact that while it's been limited work, Koehler has had a lot of success against the Reds. In the 10 1/3 innings he's worked versus Cincinnati, he's allowed just 2 runs (unearned) on six hits.

Cincinnati's Anthony Desclafani has pitched better of late, but has a 4.45 ERA and 1.639 WHIP over 6 home starts. The Reds come in having won 3 straight, but are 6-15 in this spot over the last 2 seasons. They are also just 1-6 in their last 7 games on Saturday, while Koehler is 6-2 in his last 8 starts against a team with a losing record.

Tampa Bay (as of print) is a +167 'dog. This is a team that has won 3 in a row, 8 of their L10, owns the best road record in baseball, and tops the competitive, AL East at 39-30. They are doing all this with a "pieced-together" rotation. Erasmo Ramirez is 6-2 on the season. The RH has never won more than 5 games in a year before. Over his L4 starts, the 25-year old has allowed just 3 runs in 23 1/2 IP. He faces a Cleveland lineup that has only put up more than 4 runs, 4 times over their L16 games. The Indians rank 18th in scoring (4.09 RPG), 16th in batting (Team BA of .252), and 21st in HR's (55). The Tribe also ranks 21st in pitching with a Team ERA of 4.05 and send Corey Kluber to the bump. The RH has got some good number (111 K's & 18 BB's) however, he has taken losses in his L3 turns. The Rays are 5-0 L5 vs. AL Central, 5-1 L6 as a road 'dog, and 4-0 in Ramirez's L4 starts. The Indians are 2-5 L7 games played at home, 1-5 L6 as a home fav, and 0-4 in Kluber's L4 starts as a fav of -151 to -200.

Chicago Cubs vs. Minnesota Twins Chicago Cubs

It's been a disappointing start to Jon Lester's first season with the Cubs, but he's coming off a great outing against the Reds, where he allowed just 1 run on 5 hits over 7 innings. I look for Lester to string together at least one more strong start. On the flip side of this, Minnesota's Trevor May has a 2.00 ERA over his last 3, but just allowed 3 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings in his last start. May has a 4.26 ERA over 12 starts overall, so it wouldn't be a surprise at all to see him struggle again here.

The Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 series' for game #2. Philly 1-9 in their last 10 and 0-6 in Harangs last 6 starts. Harang has gone 0-3 for an 8.15 ERA in June. He gave up 4 runs on Monday and 5 runs to the Cardinals the last time they met in late April. Lackey gave up 2 runs in his last go and 3 runs to the Phillies in their last meeting.  This is a terrible time for the Phillies and their fans. St. Louis is mighty and should grab a 2 run win here this evening.

Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Houston Astros

Keuchel has gone 8-2 with a 2.04 ERA and 0.947 WHIP in 14 starts this season.  He has dominated the Mariners in the past, going 3-3 with a 2.36 ERA and 0.929 WHIP in six career starts against them.  He has allowed just one earned run in 17 innings over his last two starts against Seattle.

Houston has scored a combined 45 runs in winning five of its last six games overall.  Its bats should stay red hot against Taijuan Walker, who is 4-6 with a 5.00 ERA and 1.444 WHIP in 13 starts this year.  In his last start against Houston, Walker allowed 7 earned runs and three homers in 3 innings of a 4-11 loss on May 2nd.

The Astros are 17-4 in Keuchel's last 21 starts vs. AL West opponents.  Houston is 16-5 in Keuchel's last 21 starts overall.  The Astros are 24-9 in their last 33 games against a right-handed starter.  The Mariners are 3-9 in their last 12 home games.  Seattle is 0-4 in its last four games following a win.  Houston is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.

The Cincinnati Reds are playing some of their best baseball of the season right now.  They have won three straight and are now 8-4 in their last 12 games overall.  I look for them to carry that momentum into today's game against Miami, which has lost three straight to fall to 29-40 on the season.  The Reds have the clear advantage on the mound behind Anthony Descalfini, who is 5-4 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.301 WHIP in 13 starts this season.  Descalfini has allowed just 3 earned runs over 12 2/3 innings in his last two starts while striking out 12.  He'll be opposed by Tom Koehler, who is 5-4 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.316 WHIP in 13 starts this year.   Koehler has pitched well at home, but he is just 2-3 with a 6.45 ERA and 1.593 WHIP in seven road starts this year.  The Reds are 9-1 in home games against NL East opponents this season.  The Marlins are 0-6 in their last 6 road games.  The Reds are 6-0 in their last 6 home games.
