They couldn't get an extension worked out before the deadline and the deal is dead.
Odds are that Gonzalez won't wind up with the Red Sox, a source tells Morosi (via Twitter), though the reporter cautions that this could change quickly. Meanwhile, a rival executive told Rosenthal (via Twitter) that the possibility of a deal happening won't die unless the Red Sox turn around and sign Adrian Beltre. The third baseman may have lost a suitor this afternoon as it seems that the A's will turn their attention elsewhere.
I love the bolded part. What he said was..."Basically, he'll either be traded or not. Who knows?"

Can I become a reporter? I would love for my "Breaking News" to be...
"The Yankees are going to sign Cliff Lee...and if they don't he'll go elsewhere."
Award winning reporting.

Yea...we're back to stage one. It is indeed, a done deal.
It was off for a bit though. Probably to get assurance of what AGon will want in a contract down the road but I guess they got the answer they were looking for.

You know me. I post it like I see it...not like I made it up.
Too bad you get worse offensively though. No Werth and No Crawford to go with him.

Have to agree with you Webba. Losing Beltre is not that bad a loss,he probably will reform to his usual medicre self offensively as soon as he gets to a bigger park for half his games.FRom what it sounds like the Red Sox are looking for a few more pieces elsewhere.

if you look at it player for player like VMart and Beltre are better than just Gonzo maybe you are right....but with Beltres track record of streaky play theo may be thinking he got his last GREAT year for 9 Million....VMart rakes theres no doubt about that but his years behind the dish are LONG gone which makes him less valuable to a team like the Red Sox who still have a very servicable DH in Ortiz (@ 13 Million by the way), Vmart will split 1B/DH duties with Cabrera....by moving a healthy Youk to third and Gonzo at first we get better defensively #1, i know Beltre can pick it and has a canon but his errors killed the sox last year, Youk will be just as good if not better going back to his natural position and the comparison at first is Laughable.....Gonzo is a gold glover. Offensively i dont think we took a hit at all, i think we got better, even without werth (who would have been the icing on the cake for this lineup, BUT DEFINATELY NOT FOR WHAT THE NATS GAVE HIM) it is still a very balanced lineup....
ellsbury LH
pedroia RH
Gonzo LH
Youk RH
Papi LH
Drew LH
Lowrie S/Scutaro RH
Tek and Salty both Switch
Cameron RH/Kalish LH
i still think they make a play at crawford but at the price wouldnt make much sense after the money Gonzo will command for an extension....and a healthy Ellsbury is a comparable player minus the power and arm

2009
Ellsbury (25 years old)
94 runs 27 doubles 8 home runs 60 rbis 49 walks 188 hits 70 stolen bases .301 average .355 OBP
2010
Crawford (27-28 years old)
110 runs 30 doubles 19 home runs 90 rbis 46 walks 184 hits 47 stolen bases .307 average .356 OBP
looks pretty comparable to me minus the POWER (homeruns and rbis).....
hmmmm younger too
10 million for crawford in 2010
496,500 for ellsbury in 2010
is saving 9.5 million PLUS worth the risk? i say it is with gonzalez
