Say Hey Kid
You Are A Legend
I am old enough to have seen Mays play in person. I used to visit my Grandparents in the Summer who lived in Pittsburgh.
My Grandad would take me to old Forbes' Field and Willie loved Pittsburgh pitching...saw him hit a few homers and run the bases with abandon. The Pittsburgh fans normally would not cheer for players on visiting teams but Willie always got a rousing welcome when he went to the plate.
Years later I went to Candlestick and saw him play there on a very cold and breezy August day. He was a rare talent, he will be missed.

"Years later I went to Candlestick and saw him play there on a very cold and breezy August day."
That comment reminds me of what Mark Twain said about San Francisco. "The coldest winter I ever spent was one summer in San Francisco." Cold in August? Yeah, leave it up to San Francisco. Been there myself and froze in September.

I was born in SF and lived in Fresno, CA when the Giants moved to SF in 1958. I was 7. All the little boys in Fresno became Giants fans almost instantly. In 1960, we moved to Chicago and dad took my brother and I to Wrigley Field to see the Giants when they came to town. Am thinking it was summer of 1961. Back then the White Sox were the It team, so Wrigley Field was basically empty. I saw him play live twice. Feel free to add 60-90 home runs to his totals, as he was drafted and was away from baseball for 2 years.
RIP
Thank you for the memories. Great memories.
For the young fellas reading this today, we knew the players via radio. They must have been 10-15' tall. Maybe taller.
