I think CHC just gave their best two pitchers away. They get back Addison Russell (SS) and BillyMcKinney (OF). I bet CHC could have gotten a lot more out of that trade.

Seriously? LOL Damn, seems like A's winning the championship now. I really like Hammels and Samardzija . Now A's have quality rotating pitcher. I Think they will replace Mills and Milone or Chavez.
Samardzija Hammels Kazmir Gray Chavez / Milone
Damn. Im putting up a $100 for A's to win

I think the Cubs got good prospects and where not going to sign either player Oakland picked up to good rental players to try to win it all good trade for both teams.

What an incredible haul for the A's. Addison Russell is a great top prospect for the Cubs to get in return but I feel they could have gotten depth here if they had waited. McKinney is only 19 so we'll see what he turns out to be and we'll see what Straily does in the NL as I imagine he'll go right into the rotation there. He hasn't pitched well this season but he hovered around a 4 ERA in the American League (yea, I know where he pitched). And he's still only 25.
The Cubs knew they weren't keeping Samardzija past next season because he'll ask for a ridiculous contract. If the Cubs weren't going beyond $85 million then they weren't going to retain him. And lets give the Cubs some credit. They got their top pitching prospect C.J. Edwards from the Garza deal and I know Cub fans don't want to hear about that but you can also look at them trading Feldman and getting Arrieta in return and he's around for a while and is making an instant impact.
Like I said...maybe they could have gotten a deeper haul had they waited for teams to be desperate come the trade deadline instead of taking the first appealing offer but that's what they did in taking Baseball America's #14 prospect in a 20 year old outfielder.
As for the A's...I love what they got as long as their transitions to the AL work out for them. Hammel was having a remarkable season in an NL park where Coors wasn't his home field but he's only had 1 other good season in his career and that was 2 years ago in Baltimore. Then he had a 5 ERA last season so his transition is highly questionable but Samardzija seems to be finally coming into his own after a rough sophomore slump in the rotation. The A's don't usually make mistakes when it comes to pitching so a rotation of Kazmir, Samardzija, Gray, Hammel and Chavez works for me. And their offense needs no fixing. I guess that sweep by the Tigers was a wake up call.

I think the Cubs got the best 2 prospects in the Oakland system and Russell is a top #5 or #6 MLB prospect.
I think it's a great trade for both teams. If Oakland doesn't win this year, they will probably flip Samardjia themselves in the off-season to replenish their minor league depth, but in the meantime, made themselves a strong favorite in the AL.

Yea...McKinney was a 1st round pick last year but he's still a ways away. As for Straily...he's not a free agent until 2019 so if he makes the transition to the Cubs like Hammel did this year then he'll be solid.
Kris Bryant, Addison Russell, Javier Baez, Jorge Soler and Arismendy Alcantara, along with Castro and Rizzo (and hopefully Olt and Lake) could make this a very fun team to watch in a few years. I feel like Castro will be traded for a package eventually, however, and that's how they'll restock on pitching prospects. I feel like the Cubs are in a good spot in the coming years. Yea they gave up this season but Hammel and Samardzija weren't getting them to .500 this year anyway, let alone the playoffs. And with Hammel as a free agent after this season and Samardzija will prove to be too costly to resign after next season, these 2 weren't a part of their future anyway.
Good move for both.

But where are they all going to play?
1B: Rizzo
2B: Alcantara
3B: Bryant/Russell
SS: Castro/Russell/Baez [I like your Castro trade scenario]
OF: Lake, Soler, Bryant/Baez
I don't see Olt sticking around as an everyday player, if at all, with his .150 AVG.

My question is: Who will take over the vacant spot in the CHC rotation now? Straily will get one of them.
Neil Ramirez (bullpen) was a starter in the minors (In 2013, 9-3 record, 3.68 ERA, 132:44 K/BB ratio, .207 BAA in Double-A before being called up). CJ Edwards (Double-A) has a .187 BAA, 1.80 GO/AO ratio, 20 K in 20.2 IP (155 K in 116.1 IP last season).
