saw this 1998 TV Movie re-make of Moby Dick last year and thought the cast was excellent with Patrick Stewart as Captain Ahab, Henry Thomas as Ishmael, Gregory Peck as Father Mapple, Ted Levine as Starbuck, Bruce Spence as Elijah and Maori Polynesian actor Piripi Waretini as Queequeg.
somewhat different telling from the 1956 classic that sticks closer to the book. one disappointment is there is NO "Elijah's Prophecy" speech when Ishmael and Queequeg encounter Elijah before the voyage because the "at sea on day you'll smell land where there be no land..." line, as preformed by the great Royal Dano in the 1956 movie, is NOT in the Melville book.
it DOES have the characters of Ahab's private Chinese whale boat crew lead by Fedallah which leads to friction on board with the rest of the mostly New Englander crew.
all in all I would say it's an EXCELLENT telling of Moby Dick which holds truer to the novel and is worth watching for the acting esp by Stewart and Levine AND as comparison to the 1956 original.
