First off your not a teacher so you answering a question is entirely differnt from a person who went to school for history and now teaches history. If the question was outside his field of study, then yes you can have a brain fart and not remember things, but to not know something you are teaching, thats just not acceptable.

the question was who was the first chief justice on the supreme court and the answer was john jay. The teacher answered john marshall.
I would think a teacher that teaches this subject would know the answer to this question, considering its not some obscure question like what was the first chief justices birthday or his dogs name.

Crus, yes to the average person that question would be tough because its been so long ago. But a teacher who is actually teaching his kids this subject should know the answer, especially consideringthey didnt ask him who the 10th chief justice was, they asked who the first which i would think would be one of the important facts a history teacher would remember.
Some of the questions i cant remember until i hear the answer again, but i certainly am not gonna miss a question in my field of study nor would i think you would from whatever job you are employed at right now.
